Everyone else was doing 3D items, so I decided to join in the fun. I might as well get some practice with 3DS Max anyway. I changed a lot of things to make it seem a little more gun-like and realistic.
Rendered with Mental Ray.
i like it.
maybe to solve the "cardboard" look..try to add thickness instead of using thin surfaces

btw is 3ds max harder to handle than rhino? or is it the other way around?
I only just figured out about the Shell modifier... if only I had known about it before. I made the gold surfaces as planes, so they were completely flat. I went in and took the edges of each one individually and brought out some fake "sides" to make it look like more than a flat plane. The cardboard look came from the lighting. I was so used to the gold look from before adding in the lighting that I didn't think it looked too bad after rendering.
Of course, Mr Basil took out the link to the non-lighted side shot in my description: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v417/MMAN11/VIPGunSideNoLight.jpg It's so much better for showing the shape and likeness to the source material. I just liked the shot I posted here a lot more.

I'd answer your question, but I only have a semester worth of experience with 3DS Max and it's the only 3D program I've worked with before.

To be honest, I don't like it all. Maybe you spent a lot of time making it, but I simply don't find anything about it that makes me like it, it looks unrealistic.. ._.

Thanks for all the comments!

It actually has a trigger of crystanol but it's hidden behind the handle guard. Any angles that show the trigger also happen to look incredibly awkward. : Also, the self-illumination is kind of awkward and doesn't allow me to change its settings well. I wish it were easier to make it cast shadows and actually look like there's something lit up in there.
Originally I had a link to the side-view version in my comments but apparently Mr. B took that out. This gives a better view of it without all the realistic lighting messing with my gold metal texture: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v417/MMAN11/VIPGunSideNoLight.jpg

For those who don't think it looks right, that's okay. I meant to make it different from the original anyway. I wanted it to seem more like an actual gun (in that it has something to fire from and the handle isn't so awkward to hold) so I added details and changed things from the sprite. What works well in a 20-pixel wide sprite doesn't always translate well to a full 3D object if you don't do some adding/changing things.

I was having problems with the gold bits being flat planes. It actually wasn't until after posting it that I thought of using extrude. I'm still getting used to the program. I'm not very good with bitmap or bump map textures yet, either.

@iAreDavidx3: I actually meant to make it larger than a pistol. Kind of a mini-rifle with another grip in the bottom-middle.

Maybe I'll do another maplestory item in 3D. Any suggestions for something a little less odd? VIP gun is cool, but it's kind of hard to tell it's even supposed to be a gun. xD

The blue part which, I'm assuming is the barrel-laser thing, looks like a sex toy stored inside the rest of the gun; the gun being its carrying case, lol.
