Any good writers here?

I'm thinking of picking up writing and was wondering on any general tips that will help improve my writing overall.

Don't TELL the reader what happens. SHOW them what happens.

Oh, and one more thing: show, don't tell. You can (and should) narrate some things, but let actions do some of the talking too.

Tips for story writing:

1. A strong vocabulary is helpful, especially if you want to write more than just a small story. If you only have a small pool of words at your disposal, you'll quickly find that you don't have a lot of ways of expressing your ideas (I've been there, and it feels really limiting/discouraging). Obviously you won't get much by reading a dictionary. The thesaurus is a good resource to frequently reference, so you don't end up using the same words over and over again. Reading also helps pick up new words, which leads to my next point:

2. Read. Find authors that you like, and read their stories. When I picked up art, I copied other artists' drawings at first (sometimes I even traced). Writing is similar. Being familiar with literature will help you loads. You'll begin to develop a deeper understanding of the English language (to the point where you can tell if something sounds right or not, without even thinking about grammar). If you're having trouble writing conversations, analyze how your favorite authors do it, and use that as a starting point. If you're having trouble with descriptive writing, see how your favorite authors describe settings/characters. If you find your vocabulary lacking (as mentioned) before, borrow some more words from their works.

3. Keep things simple. Every sentence and word you use should have a purpose. A story isn't about showing off how many big words you know - it's about telling a story that other people will comprehend. For this reason, don't get too carried away with describing things/using big words.

4. You'll quickly realize that, like with essays, editing is at least just as time consuming as dishing out the first draft. For this reason, do not worry about achieving "perfection" in your first go. Express the ideas however you like, and go back to polish it later on.

5. Have some sort of plan. If you just wing it as you go along, you'll often write yourself into dead ends. Furthermore, writing as you go with no plan doesn't allow for any foreshadowing (i.e. hinting at future events). Have a general idea of the plot - at least know how it will start and where it's going.

6. Flesh your characters out. Just because a character is fictional, it doesn't mean it has to be one-dimensional. Everyone in real life has many personas. The class clown in a story about school should not be acting like a fool 24/7.

Don't be TOO verbose, though. If you find yourself using more than one word from a thesaurus in once sentence, you're probably being too wordy.

Punctuation, & grammar are important but when your are writing a story or book, people are more interested in the lives of other people for example if the book is about your life or is written in 1st person people wont be as interested if it about a group of fictional teens that met aliens

Learn Verbs. and use words to provoke an image. Practice doesnt do anything, instead read a thesaurus! It also helps alot to write for other peoples entertainment. Treat writing like art. Learn to use 3 or 4 nouns to describe an object. The horrid aggressively turquoise, vomit inducing odorous dish rag.

You can also try doing activities. Find some instrumental music that you've never heard before, get some paper, play the music. start writing. don't think about anything, just write. don't stop to correct errors, or anything, just write exactly what comes to your mind as you listen to the music.

I love doing that. It's also interesting to see what people come up with.

@TheEmperor: The average IQ also depends on age. My IQ is likely low for my age, so I'm not denying that I can't focus because of my IQ.
Can I write something?
Sexual Fantasy : WARNING VIEWER'S DISCREtion is advised.

I was in a public shower. I was there to clean myself off from chlorine after going swimming. I noticed no one was there, so I went naked.
After a while, I had a random unwanted boner. I figured I'd leave it alone and do nothing about it. I went on taking a shower. Few minutes later, I heard noises behind me. I still had a hard on, so I tried to hide it by going to the corner. I forgot I left my clothes outside. I was screwed. I guess have to wait it out for it to get soft. But stupid me, I kept thinking about it, so it got harder. And harder. then a guy came in. He noticed I was naked. I tried to keep quiet and tried to cause no attention to myself. But he went right next to me and saw "It". I was so embarrassed, I turned away. I felt a hand on my shoulder. I ignored it and tried to finish up.

But then he said, "Hey, buddy. you've hard on, or what? Haha." He laughed. I blushed.
He reached down and grabbed "It". I want to run away but he's so strong, I can't even move.
He was holding me back. I felt like a stone.
He grabbed me by my neck and kissed it.
And then he whispered in my ear :
I'm going to "rhape" you.

I was so terrified, I wouldn't budge. We both were alone in the showers. I had no piece of clothing on, and he was almost twice the size of me.

Ot : Just include details. they work.
That was written quite poorly. All your sentences started with I. It's too repetitive. Try harder next time.

ot: I find that practice helps.

Try a word of the day dictionary online if it's too hard for you; just focus on a word a day and you'll be fine.

I've tried reading a dictionary before. Didn't remember a single word. I don't think my IQ helped me.
@mybuttxx: No, don't focus on remembering each and every word, just remember words that pop out to you, or perhaps words that strike meaning within you. I can't tell you how many times I found words that I had no idea about beforehand, and that drastically improved my writing.

Oh my, if I went around memorizing every word, I'd be a walking-talking computer...

@Solocity74 I've read Harry Potter and The Hunger Games... They both have terrible writing styles (The Hunger Games more specifically) And my honest advice to you is to not go off of those books.
It's fine if you don't enjoy them.
You should ALWAYS read books YOU enjoy.
If you don't like them read other books, I STRONGLY recommend Maximum Ride.

You can always read books to improve your style of writing.
Proofread, definitely.
Improve vocabulary.

I find reading very good books improves your writing by a lot.
I know this from experience.
I was getting B's in writing then I started reading TONS of books,
then I started getting straight A+'s.

Recommended books:
Maximum Ride.
Harry Potter.
Hunger Games.
Darkest Powers.
Darkness Rising.
The Dark Divine.
These are great reads and they can improve your writing greatly, in my opinion, of course.

Read out loud to yourself, make sure it flows well.
Edit it.
Take out extra stuff you don't need, add stuff you think you need more of.
Remember that, when you write, you want to tell a story.

To create a vast scene of a fantasy, or a dim veil of darkness is all the same. You must be able to flow and paint a picture with your words. I find that reading a dictionary helps (No joke) and so does reading a bit of some Romanticism writings.

exp: Winning the national Writing contest in 2011~ <3
When you read a dictionary you remember the words? I tried it and I tried to stay focused, and I remembered maybe 1 word after I was done.
