i wanted to like Accel World bc it has an out-of-the-norm protag, but the relationship dynamics in it were as bad as SAO. stopped reading it sometime after Red King was an ally? so i've seen less of Accel World but it wasn't offensive to me like SAO was.

In terms of the anime: Accel World had a lot more interesting concepts. The story itself reeled me in to just watch the thing. Despite the whiny main character for the majority of the series, there's character growth. He actually changes, as opposed to our young Kirito here.
SAO, in terms of the anime, just looks like another harem, except this time in an actual online game.
@NekoChan: Keep telling yourself that. I admit SAO is far from perfect and has its flaws but it definitely does not deserve the bashing it gets from individuals like yourself.
@Hishotodo: If you read/watched, you'd understand that he was forced to choose the avatar, but then he ends up just sticking with it later on. I guess it's understandable to be turned away from it if it's that offensive though.

That lasts for all of like half an episode, when he gets his battle avatar he rarely uses the pig skin. And the fact that people stop AW just because harayuki is short and fat is just stupid, that is like stopping One Piece just because Luffy is an idiot.
People need to stop comparing anime based off fan hype, stuff is always going to get mixed reviews but, things that get hyped to ridiculous heights (shingeki no kyojin, sword art online, tengan toppa gurren lagann, etc) are all going to get people bashing them hard just because of the hype that fans gave them. (Personally 2/3 of the things i mentioned i plain don't like, but TTGL was something that actually lived upto its hype in my eyes).

Either you live up to the hype or you don't. No one is going to hide the fact that they like a certain show because a lot of other people like it. Have you ever heard anyone say, "Dark Knight/24 was soo good but since everyone is crazy over it, I'm gonna say it wasn't great or just not mention it." People don't ignore something because it's soo good.
A lot of people say SAO lived up to its hype but a lot of people said it didn't live up to its hype and thought it spiraled out of its initial greatness.

-AW had actual character development, where SAO had absolutely none at all. -On the other hand, SAO had a high budget which allowed for some crazy asspulls to go unnoticed, where AW could barely make it through its second cour. -AW had progression, whereas SAO was just Kirito blowing everything away with some crazy hack every other episode. -However, SAO's when compared to the source material, was a relatively accurate adaption. AW on the other hand wasn't as close to the source. It also didn't help that Haruyuki was voiced by Kaji Yuki who spent the past 6 months voicing Shoe (GC) so he wasn't well received.
The list goes on and on for a while. Though if the Accel World adaption budget was as high as SAO and was adapted by a decent studio like A-1, AW would've blown that .hack rip-off out of the water, no problem.
OT: neither anime adaptions were particularly good (I'm assuming that's what we're discussing), though what would have made SAO and AW good is if you combined them together to make one fusion anime. Take AW's cast and toss it into SAO's setting and you would get an MMORPG survival story with actual development. Something like Haruyuki getting thrown into the SAO world, but he starts off like a pansy, acts like a coward that doesn't want to fight, etc. After a few episodes of exposure and losing his friends to NPCs/PKs, he starts to realize that the world he's in is real life and begins to go alpha over the course of 6-10 episodes of actual character development, gaining allies and power on the way. At the climax, no crazy superpower deus ex machina happens, but instead Harayuki barely lives after the last fight -- the notion persuades Kayaba to return everything to normal because he's an interesting person (probable reason of SAO was because he was bored of real life). Because Harayuki piqued Kayaba's interest, we see cameos of him in ALO helping Harayuki out, because Sugou is an ass for abusing the SAO framework -- he's also one of the worse antagonists out there. If anything, he wouldn't be in this SAO/AW fusion, but this is just a rough plot I made in 2 minutes. Generic story, but better than what the SAO adaption turned out to be.
It's actually kind of the same in the second part of both animes, there's this one crazy dude who wants to destroy everything they had, but in the end destroyed/locked them up in jail,in both, but Accel World cause of animation xD

I think most people go for the typical handsome good looking MC (even if they're wimpy or complain to much). Its like saying you want to see a chubby anime girl character, not really haha.
