How to ask for a new position?

Had to withdraw from college for the semester to help out at home. Got a job at Walmart, 3rd shift. When they hire new employees, they are put in on maintenance. When a stocking position opens up they move a dependable maintenance worker who has been there the longest to the stocking position and hire in new maintenance members.

I'm tired of maintenance. It's disgusting and a terrible job overall. I've been there three months and they have never asked me to stock. There are 5 others who are maintenance members, one who will do nothing but maintenance, two who don't care if they do maintenance or stock, a guy who hates maintenance like me, and a guy who was hired in 3 weeks ago. Everyone on 3rd knows I hate maintenance, even the managers.

The guy who also hates maintenance has been there two months now, I've been there three. They haven't asked me to stock once and this other guys gets off maintenance twice a week to go stock. But they don't ask me to go stock? I'm tired of maintenance but I'm not the kind of guy to speak up and complain about stuff to people directly because I don't want to start problems or anything.

I don't understand why this guy gets to stock though and I'm stuck still doing this janitor crap. I work faster than him. So far it seems like I am the most dependable employee on 3rd shift as a whole. Since I've been there everyone else has called in at least once and others are late all the time (there is even a guy who hasn't shown up without calling in twice and still has a good position), and I've worked every time they ask me to come in when somebody else calls in. Half the people out there have a terrible work ethic yet still have one of the better positions. Yet I'm still stuck with the shattiest job out there.

TL;DR- How do I go about approaching my managers that I want off maintenance or at least want a few days off of it like all the other maintenance associates?

go check out the availability of other positions. let your manager know your interest in other positions. start looking for another job where you have more upward mobility because wal-mart doesn't care about you; they'll work you til you look like the senior citizens that work there. consider applying for financial aid so you can return to college and fiinsh your degree so you will not be stuck doing minimum wage jobs the rest of your life and the opportunity cost of time where you could making higher salary from a degree.

Work somewhere else like a grocery store or fast food restaurant.

Try to talk to your manager about your situation and see what they can do. OR you can look for another job since you hate your job so much and just quit when you get the other job.

Just speak to your managers in a calm fashion about your observations with regards to the newer employee getting into stock weekly, the store policy for positions, and how you feel about maintenance.

There's the possibility that the newer guy is friends with one of the managers and he's been set up as the stock replacement guy.

you just say: "this is what i want __________" and "i've been a good, if not great employee these past couple months and i think i deserve the position" then "if you could accommodate my request, it would be greatly appreciated"
