help me change my name

So it's that time of life where I'll be applying for new jobs soon and I'm seriously considering changing my name

I've been blessed with the name Jorge which has served me well for the past 24 years, but it's time to retire that name.

Because racism is a real thing, I'm switching to my middle name- Anthony

That is until I thought I might go by Tony since that's what my parents call me...

What do you think? Tony or Anthony?

*On my resume it will read either J. Tony or J. Anthony "last name"

Anyone else have to change their names to apply for jobs?

@xtripled thanks bud, that means a lot I'm glad things were able to work out for your friend.. it really is troublesome but always reassuring to hear good stories like that

@TehRaygunicorn: You are going against Gods choice though....you said "i was blessed with the name Jorge" yet you are not thankful for the name at all and are choosing to hide it. "Racism exists" no....that is just God telling you that it is not the path he has chosen for you and instead you need to listen to his guidance. If you truly believe in God (attend church daily and pray each night) then God should protect you from anything happening.

not sure about what you should change your name too but i definitely understand your reasoning. My friend wants to be a pilot, well he is one now, but after he graduated from aviation school he couldn't find a job even though his resume was strong enough and he met all the credentials. After months of trying to get a job, he started to think it was his name that was ultimately holding him back. He's Asian and his parents gave him an "Asian" first name which he didn't mind at all and all his friends/family still call him by that name today, it's just for professional reasons, he changed his name. We all know about the stereotype (no matter how true or not depending on the person) about how Asians can't drive or have small eyes, or maybe that mainly applies to Chinese people, i don't know but anyways, after he changed his name to a more "white" name, he got a job as a pilot shortly afterwards. Maybe it was just bad timing when he was looking for a job, maybe it was just a coincidence but i'm happy for him.

wish you the best of luck

If anything our name should give you a boost. Companies have to meet diversity requirements, and having a different sounding name should give you leg up on that. Unless of course you're applying for some minimum wage job, then it really doesn't matter.

@windowlegs are you intentionally ignoring what I just said to you? I. love. my. name. I'm not getting rid of it- simply choosing to go by middle name from now on when applying to new positions.

@sparkshooter: He said that he was blessed with his name. Yet he doesnt seem to agree with Gods choice. so he was not blessed at all instead, he was punished for being such a nasty person in a past life.

@PinnacleWalk sry i am not azn, this name will not work for me
@system775 stahp u flatter me <3 you'll be so much more than a water cooler, just you wait
@WindowLegs I think you misunderstood what I was trying to say- there's absolutely nothing wrong with the name Jorge, and I do embrace it very much (I even choose to go with the traditional pronunciation.. "hor-heh&quot. I'm talking about switching my name (to my middle name) for application purposes to see if my prospects increase or not~
@Thiefy996 hahaha I definitely agree with that..
@tonyroxhehe oh hey Tony- this will be the name of my first child, thanks
@sparkshooter lol exactly- preeeeetty sure that's the parents job (at first, at least)
@DeprivedChild Ahhhh yes. My parents used to call me Toto when I was a wee lad- isn't that a wonderful name?
@lilallan
@Shir I think this may sum up what I end up doing haha thanks!
@DrRomance it makes me sad kids these days will grow up with out the PPG -sheds tear-
well if youre Christian, assuming this guy is Christian since hes white and hispanic, your life is God's plan. he made every second of it the way it is cuz he knows whats best. sure youre going to have ups and downs, but thats what makes life worth it and he wants us to experience it.
have a nice day
If your parents choosing your name was a part of God's plan, then wouldn't you changing your own name also be a part of God's plan?
Unless you're saying that by changing your own name, you've basically successfully defied and altered God's plan?
I fail to see the logic in your argument.

@cantbestopped lmao I haaaaate that name

And look, I definitely came across as more aggressive than I would have liked (and I'm glad you didn't allow that to exacerbate the conversation- your maturity is much appreciated) and for that I apologize

I definitely understand where you're coming from- alas, I don't think it's a realistic expectation based on today's current market, trends, etc.
I had my resume vetted by numerous professionals with much more experience than I, yet when I applied to well over 200 positions.. I received one call back. And that one call back is where I got my job (hence my confidence in interviewing)
Part of me can't help but wonder what would have happened if my name had been Anthony instead of Jorge on those 199 other applications. I'm certainly not implying everyone would have called me back, but I definitely would like to believe more would have.
It's a theory, but one I'm willing to test out- and like I said, I'm technically not changing my name because my legal name is Jorge Anthony.. just dropping out the bit that blatantly points toward my ethnic roots

Does this make me incredibly sad? You bet. Will people be confused? Probably. Will I care when I get hired at my next job? Nope.

@cantbestopped the naivety is real

So if two people apply for a job with nearly identical resumes- one named Lawfunduh and the other Molly- you think they'd have an equal chance?

The job I'm currently working for had a hiring rate of less than 1%- I'm not here seeking advice on how to get hired, or how to fix my resume. I'm quite confident in the work I've done and how I present myself.

So you can either answer the questions I posted above, or move along

Also, I'm a white hispanic, so there's nothing to hide here once I get into that interview room
And I'm not changing my name per se- simply opting to go with my middle name from now on since it's more ethnically ambiguous
