Majoring in something you dont really like

Anyone in college experiencing this?
I am only pursuing my major because I want to be a teacher when I grow up; but math gets so difficult and it gets super frustrating and I want to quit sometimes. Im scared that since Im bad at math, I won't be able to graduate. I am quite confident at high school math though... But i also love math because it is really interesting. Love-Hate Relationship.

Are you sure you're in the right program OP? Because iirc math majors don't take the same program as people who intend to teach high school math. You don't need differential geometry and a solid background in topology to teach trig m8.

i am only pursuing my major because i like drawing and because the courses i took in grade 12 limited me from choosing anything else that wasn't art related.
it ok tho i guess? ? ?

I'm majoring in Finance but there are some aspects of the major that I dislike. I hate the fact how we need to memorize long formulas when we won't even be using them in the real world. Everything is computerized in the workplace.

Man I love these major discussion threads.

I'm currently in my 2nd year of my Biomedical Engineering program. It's a lot of workload and material to learn in a short time. What keeps me focused and passionate is the end-goal of it. It's truly not about the money, despite me always getting comments about how "rich" I'll be, I'm not slightly concerned about that. What keeps me interested is seeing pictures like this on my Facebook Timeline (following a BME page) and knowing that there's so much I can do once I complete my degree. I'm also considering grad school in BME if my grades and CV is good enough.

Basically, you need to remember why you started something to begin with, keep a strong mind and get through it.

For you, I suggest getting extra help in maths (your university should offer math tutoring for free), look up PatrickJMT videos and keep practicing the homework examples! You'll be amazed how quickly you'll understand the material.

i was in a scenario like that. i first enrolled myself into history because i had no idea what major to be in. even though i liked history, i didnt really know what career i wanted to be. i took a geology class as part of my GED requirements for transfer and i really enjoyed the class. i decided to switch my major from history to geology. however, i soon found myself extremely unsatisfied with the math class requirements. i began to miss reading books about history so i went back to history and took a low level math class for the GED requirement.

I was having an issue like that as of late. With my major in uncertain waters my family said that I should do medical assisting and do radiology later. Truth is that I hate medical assisting and want to only be in the radiology field. Luckily I won't have to worry anymore after today.

I used to be a business major for about 3 years because my dad pushed me to study that (we don't have student loans where I live, so my dad pays for college) but I always wanted to study film/tv. I hated business after a semester in and the stress from business school and doing something I hated was so bad that I got kicked out because I was failing everything horribly. After a year of doing nothing and hiding the fact that I got kicked out, my parents eventually found out and finally agreed to let me major in film/tv. But let me tell you, those 4 years were the worst of my life so far.

If you're planning on becoming a teacher, you don't need to learn advanced math such as Calculus, linear algebra, and etc unless you're actually planning to become a math teacher. Also, can't you become a teacher with any major really? All you need to do is teacher college after you complete your major to learn how to become a teacher.

Thankfully no.

I kinda wanted to go into engineering since grade 8. Really glad I chose mechanical. Like every class at least taught me a few interesting/useful things about how stuff works.

I was always really curious about how all the science incorporates itself into everyday stuff. I'm glad because now I have a general understanding about how a lot of different things interact.

I'm kind of in that situation.
I'm doing Chemistry (biochem concentration) and Dramatic Art but ideally I want to get into medicine.
I absolutely LOVE my theatre classes. But for my chem major, I have to do so much math, physics, and hardcore chemistry like pchem and quantum that I'm genuinely not interested in. The stuff I want to learn is in med school. I want to learn about the human body, diseases, how to treat people, etc. I don't want to learn quantum mechanics, gel electrophoresis, thermodynamics, etc.

Well don't teach math if you're not good with it

not personally, but i'm sure that there are many people that feel that way, especially people that choose a biology based major to pursue pre-med, only to find that their lack of interest in the basics or their inability to cope with the difficult parts pigeonholes them into a few career choices. a lot of people in college are pressured by peers to pursue what others consider 'practical/marketable'. if you're going into a major as a means to an end, it's inevitable that difficulties will arise if you view challenges negatively rather than as seeing them as a way of attaining a greater appreciation/understanding of the subject.
