2014 Fifa World Cup Unofficial Thread

Welcome to the 2014 FIFA World Cup thread. Here we discuss the big event regarding one long month of football (more commonly known as soccer in the US) played to see who wins the whole thing.

The World Cup is finally underway after Brazil's 3-1 victory over Croatia. Neymar was a goal short of a hat trick, and Croatia's only goal was an own goal by Marcelo in the 11th minute, the first goal of the WC.

Group A: Brazil, Mexico, Cameroon, Croatia
Group B: Spain, Netherlands, Australia, Chile
Group C: Colombia, Greece, Ivory Coast, Japan
Group D: Uruguay, England, Costa Rica, Italy
Group E: France, Ecuador, Honduras, Switzerland
Group F: Argentina, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Nigeria, Iran
Group G: Germany, Portugal, USA, Ghana
Group H: Belgium, South Korea, Russia, Algeria

Who are you rooting for? I've been a Brazil fan since I was 7 (16 years). I also regularly wear my only Brazil jersey which is the famous Neymar yellow one.

MY PREDICTIONS:

Group A: Brazil, Mexico
Group B: Netherlands, Spain
Group C: Japan, Colombia
Group D: Uruguay, Italy
Group E: France, Ecuador
Group F: Argentina, Nigeria
Group G: Germany, Portugal
Group H: South Korea, Belgium

Round of 16:

Brazil 2:1 Spain
Netherlands 4:1 Mexico
Japan 0:1 Italy (a.e.t.)
Uruguay 3:0 Colombia
France 2:1 Nigeria
Argentina 4:2 Ecuador
Germany 2:0 Belgium
South Korea 1:3 Portugal

Quarterfinals:

Brazil 1:1 Italy (Brazil wins penalty kicks)
France 1:4 Germany
Netherlands 3:2 Uruguay
Argentina 2:2 Portugal (Argentina wins penalty kicks)

Semifinals:

Brazil 2:3 Germany
Argentina 0:2 Netherlands

Third Place Match:

Brazil 1:3 Argentina

2014 World Cup Final:

Germany 2:1 Netherlands

CHAMPION: Germany
RUNNER-UP: Netherlands
THIRD PLACE: Argentina
FOURTH PLACE: Brazil

So, here we go with the 2014 FIFA World Cup!

I said it before the cup even started. I told everyone Germany, my favorite team would win. But noooooooooooooooooo everyone told me Brazil would win. Well look at what we did to them

the german goal was impressive. messi's goal would have been good but the ball went of course.
@WontPostMuch: 1 defensive mistake means a teams overall performance is unconvincing?
That's not what I said at all. Unconvincing also doesn't mean I think they're bad, just that for all the hype they got, they didn't seem to have many decisive victories or truly outstanding plays.

haha messi so bad. as if he's the new maradona. flop flop.

Agreed with @wontpostmuch

Stats don't mean much if all your shots on target go straight to the keeper

That one shot by messi though.. You could literally see the Germans sigh in relief ahaha

60% possession
10 shots (7 on target) vs 10 (2 on target)
64 dangerous attacks vs 30 dangerous attacks
Oh come on, Germany had a pretty embarassing defensive mistake early on but Argentina just blew it. And most of the really clear chances seemed to come from Argentina. Germany didn't play badly but most of their chances didn't seem as clear as what was squandered by Arg. I conceded they had great control of the ball and there's no question about them being a dangerous team, but a lot of their performances just seemed average and I can't help but wonder if Germany would have been able to react had Messi or Higuani not just derped at crucial moments.
I'm still not convinced by this German team. It felt like if Argentina had been more on their game and actually defined, Germany would not have had an answer. They had good control but just seemed lackluster otherwise.

That said what a beautiful goal.

how did Brazil even managed to get to top 4 with such a crap team?
Refs and Fifa is a business so they had to push such a "prominent" home team forward- that's my honest belief anyway

Colombia vs netherlands would have been a much more exciting game imo

Oh Brazil

This is so fun to watch, to watch them writhe and suffer- they didn't deserve to make it this far, and now the whole world knows this to be true

Silva is a scumbag, he should have been ejected for that play- let's go Netherlands, score 2 more to make this baby at least 4 to nil

No dive needed. He is lucky that wasn't a red, Silva was the last man back.

no neymar + silva. gg. This game could have been A LOT worse, heck brazil fans should be grateful how they kinda eased their game in the second half. If Germany kept on attacking them like they did in the 1st half, 10-0 (or 10-1).

Pretty happy Klose got a feat finished in 3 games...I guess it's gonna be a great day for fans and players to get wasted. Just call this revenge against sweden in 1950 guys.

And if Colombia had rightfully won (Yepes wasn't offsides, slash every single bs call against Colombia that game), James would have had a chance to score another goal.. I'd see him scoring one against Germany despite a Colombian loss

Also lol @ Brazil flopping around trying to get fouls called on Brazil. This ref isn't buying any of it and I most satisfied

Brazil stop trying to fake your way into penalty kthx
above: the one who scores the most goals deserves the golden boot, and Muller have enough time to score more goals than Rodriguez

Brazil's Neymar is like Mueller from Germany and Messi from Argentina. w/o him, Brazil attack is pretty much non-existant
If theres an opportunity for goal they will try to score but theyre just taking the ball away and keeping possession. Brazil has no creativity in their offense to be a threat.
People say Neymar is overrated but his offense presence one of the main reasons why Brazil's offense is known to be very formidable. Not to mention without their team captain Sliva, their defense is somewhat laughable.
