I just realized I have no dreams or goals

I've never really stopped to think about what I want in life.
I've had a few 'possible' careers that I thought I'd like: Psychologist, Software Developer (for video games), Neurologist, Comic Artist, just junk like that.
However, I've never really felt strongly enough about anything to devote myself to learning more about them so I'll succeed.
I just really have no motivation, and I have no idea what kind of career could help me find it.

I don't think asking for 'help' would do any good, but I just wanna know if anyone else feels the same way.
I graduate from HS this year and I'm gonna end up not knowing what to do.

@BrandonIsBack well hey at least you don't have to worry about working towards anything. You've completed all your goals, because you have none! Great job.

You need discipline, not motivation. My situation parallels yours in many ways. I'm pursuing my degree partially out of interest, but also uncertainty and opportunity. Look at the market value of your degree, not just preference. Don't ask yourself how to stay motivated; it's a race against time. Let it come to you. Discipline is a means to an end. Cultivate it.

If you really have no idea, go into computer science.

1. Computer scientists have good job security (as long as they're competent) because pretty much everything in the world is moving in a digital direction.
2. Any creative endeavor you could undertake would benefit from a knowledge of programming and working with new technology/applications. You mention making video games and comic book art, those are both things where a familiarity with computer technology can only help.

@TheZigen: What do you plan to do with an illustration degree? I'm in a pretty similar situation, but I feel like I shouldn't even bother trying to graduate because my degree is gonna be so worthless (game art and production).

@BrandonIsBack: me neither until I realized how many people have had girlfriends compared to me.

I'm all three of those, but I could still easily get a few girls if I wanted them.
I think the key is to have confidence and find the right one, they're not as picky as you think.

Go to local universities/colleges/technical schools and see if anything catches your eyes. Don't just glance over everything, give them all a real look.

Possibly take a year off. That'll be better then jumping into post-secondary without a clue of what to do for the rest of your life. From my experience, I had ideas of what I wanted to do, jumped into uni, and then found other fields interesting. Tbh, I think inspiration and the journey of finding your passions can come from all directions, regardless of going to school or not, as long as you have the determination in exploring and being open to all doors/possibilities.

You said you never stopped to really think about what you want to do in life. You don't need a year or 5 years to get that to happen. If you don't like the situation you're in, change things up, maybe ACTUALLY sit down and make a list of things you enjoy doing, things you're competent in, etc. Just write it down and try to analyze what you've written down. The internet's right in front of you, the journey starts with you exploring Google.

This is why I encourage people to not go directly from high school to college unless they're really passionate about something. Get a job after high school, work for a couple years, and you'll organically develop new hobbies and passions. Plus you'll have money saved up for school expenses, should you decide on a field that requires a degree.

I'm probably gonna end up an old man before I finally find what I want to do.
I'll be so excited I'll die from a heart attack.

that's good thinking. The craving results in suffering. just focus on your future ability to survive.

my whole life I wanted to be an illustrator but after two years of college I lost all my passion for it and even though I'm still working toward that goal now it feels like I'm just trying to get through with something, not necessarily because I want to but because I need a degree/experience to get job that will support me. other than graduating I have no real life goals

What do you love to do in life?
I used to be at that same exact point when I was still in HS. I love games and computers.
I felt that I really haven't done anything with my life, but this year changes. It just takes time for some people
to decide what they want to do. Doesn't have to be now, but it will come to you.
