English 11 Problems.

Sometimes in class, the teacher gives us short stories to read, following questions to answer..
And my reading strength is (well I feel) is very weak.
Like when I try to read fast, I lose the comprehension and I don't really understand what the story is about.
But when I read slowly, and thoroughly I can comprehend the story and I can understand it. (e.g other students can read a story in 15-20 mins and can understand it, but I have to take like a good hour to understand it)

Can I have some tips on reading quickly+comprehending any piece of literature? Because I know i'll need this, especially in exams.

Thanks guys

Back in middle school, I used to read sooo much. Over the years, it's helped me by a lot. My strategy is to read the questions before I read the story, so that way, I know what I'm looking for. And highlight the answer once you find it so you can go back later.

@bumbumhi: I read about hundreds of pages everyday thanks to school and RPG's. Oh, I have to heavily thank myself for that teacher in the second grade that made me like reading and back then, I read so many books it wasn't even funny. I also have to thanks these forums.

I usually try to form images in my mind that relate to the story, best case scenario would be to play out the entire story as if it were a movie.
Don't focus too much on the specifics when you're doing this though, just try to imagine the main characters/setting/plot/etc.

Read more, and write down main plot points during the books

Like what others said, read. When you read try to remember the key events, which you gradually notice as you read more.

For my trick I like to create images in my head that will be the main points of the story. Then I will eventually piece each image together to my best memory when I finish to kind of summarize it to myself.

annotate and write down notes as you read
they work as a point of reference for you when you lose your train of thought

i have the same problem. i feel like i probably have undiagnosed adhd and that's why. the stories are just always so ridiculously boring and i end up thinking about something else while i'm reading so i have to reread it and waste time. somehow even with the reading problems, i tested in the top 1% for reading and writing in my state. not sure how i feel about going to a doctor and being prescribed adderall, but it's possible that that's your problem, too.
