Anime

Suggest me some anime?

So, I like to spend time every now and then watching an anime during summer vacation. The thing is, Im not sure which I should watch. Thats where I'd like to ask you basilers. ^3^

The sort of anime's I am into is either Action (Nothing too gory please. o3o), Romance, and Comedy. (This ones a biggie). I have seen Naruto, Pokemon, The Melancholy of Haruhi, Inuyasha, Fruits Basket, Lucky Star, and I think thats it. I do plan to watch Fairy Tail too though!

So..anyone have any suggestions? (:

It also makes football look good as hell n_n b
Couple of episodes?
Wakfu really only gets good at Ep 15

I just finished watching the first 2 episodes of Gurren Lagann. The anime looks very promising. I like the nighttime backgrounds.

B/MrBot PM'd me last year saying I could keep the guide as long as Basil didn't advocate it.

plus it was removed for vulgarity

A mod deleted the most recent (June 2012) version of the guide and suspended me. Though I previously had permission for the other guides, the mod/mrbot gave me some condescending response about its vulgarity for the one that was deleted. Funny thing is that there were no offensive words and I clearly marked every site with 18+ material.

currently waiting for Mr. B (it's been over two weeks) to either give me permission or reject a repost of an updated guide.
The most recent version is unfortunately the Feb 2012 one.

I have a backup for the June 2012 version (the one that was deleted), but it's in thread format so it looks horrid in a post form.

[header=WatchingAnime]Watching Anime[/header]
[header2]If you are, stop streaming your anime. If you still stream after reading this guide, you're retarded.[/header2]
[header2]Seriously, stop watching your anime on those crappy sites (CrunchyRoll, Anime44, or whatever).[/header2]
Question "Why are streams bad, yumtoast?"
Answer Ads, loading/buffering, horrid audio and visual quality, and the list goes on and on. Example:

This is a scene from the 1080p Blu-ray of Spice & Wolf season 2, episode 10. Look at the quality! 1080p full FLAC audio: you can't go wrong with that. On the other hand we have the stream (TV rip) of Spice and Wolf II, episode 10 I found on watchanimeon, which is a streaming site. The picture quality, sound quality, and subtitle quality is atrocious.

Sorry malapo, but your Redline.gif comparisons 404'd.
720p is the best possible download choice, however to use judgement. If a series that was released pre-2000 has a 720p download available, it's most likely an upscale from 480p. Same goes for 1080p. If your monitor can't play it or if it was released pre-2008 really, then it's an upscale. Even newer movie and Blu-Ray releases are simply upscales and wasted bandwidth/storage space.*

Also, HorribleSubs/CrunchySubs are direct rips from CrunchyRoll, as I'm sure there'd be some confusion in the fansub group name.
[*]If you, for some reason, still don't understand the fact that downloading anime is 100% superior to streaming anime, refer to this chart created by an anon.

[header=DownloadingAnime]Downloading Anime:[/header]
[*]Nowadays, most anime download sites use torrents. Familiarize yourself with both torrent files and a client (uTorrent, etc) if you have not already. I won't go in-depth about how torrents work, so use Google. Honestly, explaining torrents is a huge pain in the ass.

uTorrent A bit-torrent client. Use it.

Nyaa Torrents Most popular site for anime downloads, and has torrents for music, software, games, and other miscellaneous things. Torrent only.
Baka BT Similar to NyaaTorrents, except they only host high-quality (720p+), completed series, OSTs, etc. Baka BT has an enormous seed pool, so expect fast downloads. Torrent only. Account required.
Tokyo Tosho Same thing as NyaaTorrents. Torrent only.
AnimeByt.es Practically a secret club for torrenting your anime. You need to fill out an application to be accepted. Torrent only. Account required.

Anime Take Provides both torrent and download links for anime. You will only get relevant anime titles on this site, meaning that almost any anime that aired more than a year ago will be unavailable.

â"°The next 5 links below this sentence should not be used unless for some reason the 4 links above this aren't working. Nyaa, Baka, and Anime Take are all highly recommended.â"°

Anime Out for small-encoded anime (lower quality, lower memory cost).
Anime Buzz Download links and torrents.
Minitheatre Small encoded anime.
Anime Senshi Download links and torrents.
AnimeA Download links and torrents.

[*]If your college blocks torrents, good luck trying to get past it.
[*]If you can't download torrents/hate DDLs, you can try XDCC. Here's an XDCC guide created an anon.

â"°It's recommended that you download anime in .mkv rather than .mp4 or .avi.â"°

Question What's .mkv?
Answer: It's essentially the main video format (it's actually a container for subtitles) used for anime nowadays. .avi/.flv has become obsolete while .mp4 is still used for RAWs, which you guys probably don't use unless you understand Japanese. Anime encoded correctly in .mkv will let you do stuff such as turn off subtitles and whatnot.

â"°To have your computer read .mkv files, you must download one of these:â"°

CCCP: Combined Community Codec Pack for Windows users; comes with MPC: Media Player Classic and several decoders, formats, etc. This pack does literally everything for you. It is a godsend. Just open it with default settings and you're practically good-to-go.
MPlayer OSX Extended for Mac users.
MPC: Media Player Classic for Windows and Linux users. This is included if you download CCCP.
VLC Player for Mac, Ubuntu, Windows, and Fedora users.
MPlayer 2 also for Linux users.

[*]CCCP with MPC is my personal favorite. Don't use VLC (if you use it) as it has trouble with color banding.

[header=Subgroups]Which Subgroups Should I Use?[/header]
When you start watching more and more anime (especially when you download it), you'll notice that different subgroups churn out different subtitles for the same anime. Which groups are good? Which groups are bad? Every group has its distinctions, but it's really your choice for anime-viewing. This section is for general reviews of subgroups so you get the gist of things.

[*]Refer to the FS Wiki for more details.
[*]You can also read the Fansubs Anime Blog for more accurate reviews.

Miscellaneous Groups
[Zero-Raws], [Raws-4U], [Leopard-Raws]: These are the three biggest RAW providers out there, whether it be TV rips or Blu-ray rips.

[Crunchy Roll]: They stream their subs on their website. Of course, they have a fee for premiums which is retarded (see: HorribleSubs). Though the subs are decent, they provide 1080p downloads even though they're just upscales from 720p.

Subgroups
[a.f.k.:] Though they're average subbers, their encoding could use some work.

[Ayako:] Quantity over quality group. They try to be the "first person" to get the job done by rushing things; obvious mistakes everywhere.

[bss]: Is this group even active anymore? They're not even good in the first place, so no harm done.

[Chihiro]: Opposite of Ayako, they prefer quality over quantity. Unneeded visuals, however.

[CoalGuys]: A mixed bag. At times, their subs are amazing in quality, but at times it's sub-par.

[CoalGirls]: Not to be confused with CoalGuys, CoalGirls is more of a Blu-Ray release group, but they occasionally do subs for anime. Though their subs are good, their encoding is LOLBLOATED, which earns them the title of BloatGirls. 800mb for an episode of anime in 1080p with FLAC audio? If you have the storage capacity, then you'll love CoalGirls.

[Commie]: Very fast subgroup with very low file-sizes. However, their subs are... awful? They localize everything ("tsundere" to "hot n' cold," 2ch memes into western ones, etc) and it's just cringe-worthy for many people.

[Doki]: Universally accepted as being a bad group; avoid if possible.

[Evetaku]: Though fairly new, they have subs that are better than at least 75% of the other groups.

[FFFpeeps]: Ugly fonts, type-setting is awkward, and sometimes strange diction.

[gg]: Troll subs general. Though they're good at times, they seemingly almost always troll. Though people argue that [gg] trollsubs objectively bad shows (Hidan no Aria, etc), there's really no point in doing so. Don't use them unless you know they're not screwing up.

[Hadena]: Don't bother using this group; infamous for being utter garbage.

[HorribleSubs]: They steal their subs from Crunchy Roll, which is fairly decent. Don't use HS if there's a better group available.

[m.3.3.w]: Regarded as a slow group. You'll probably end up using another one before they release an episode.

[Mazui]: Recognized as a top-tier subgroup despite their name (TL Note: mazui = unskilled, bad). If they're subbing something, you should probably use their subs over many other groups. The only problem with Mazui is that they use ugly fonts occasionally.

[Nutbladder]: Never use their subs. The leader of the group was originally from [gg], but was kicked out for being a jackass. Also, their subs are awful as well.

[SFW]: Though they're not good, they're better than other groups.

[SHiN-gx]: If you were fluent in Japanese, you would realize how horrible their subtitles are.

[StaticSubs]: High-tier group, but they've disappeared somewhere.

[THORA]: They don't do subs often, but they often have problems with type-setting/style.

[Underwater]: Get a load of this group. They recently started offering commissions... at $25 an episode. Also, Daiz (leader) is known for "ruining fan-subbing."

[UTW]: Pretty good group, but the subs are sometimes awkward.

â"°If there are other popular groups out there you would like to give a short review on, just post it in the comments.â"°

[header=ReadingManga]Where to get Manga[/header]
[*]The same rules apply to manga as they do to anime: downloading means higher quality, but I'm posting some hosting sites just to take up space. Plus I know that some people are way too lazy to download 3mb of manga.

3) Open the cookie manager add-on you have.
4) Open your EH cookies and look at the member ID: there should be a 6-digit number.
5) Open your ExH cookies and edit the ipb_member_id to match your EH ID.
6) Go back to your EH cookies and copy the ipb_pass_hash value to the clipboard.
7) Return to your ExH cookies and click "ADD COOKIE."
8) In the NAME field, type "ipb_pass_hash" and paste the value in from your clipboard.

10) Refresh the ExH tab: you should have full access.
11) Never ask about the sad panda or pining the fjords again.

@yumtoast154: Someone in the thread might have posted something vulgar perhaps? The most recent one I retrieved was I think Feb. 2011... Here's hoping we'll be able to retrieve it. Do you happen to have back ups of the thread? :o

@RisingRain:
@Fiercerain:

Wakfu, Wakfu, Wakfu!

The first episodes are pretty derpy though. Goes by too fast o.o

butbutbut it knows when to have lighthearted humor and drama-drama (Seriously. I cried for the antagonist n_n)

It also makes football look good as hell n_n b

If you're a fan of anime movies, pretty much anything by Studio Ghibli, and 5 centimeters per second.
Aria (3 seasons), Kimi ni Todoke, and Azumanga Daioh are good choices as well.

Similar to Fruits Basket (I think)
- Honey and Clover
- Midori Days
- Ranma 1/2 --> A bit old but funny

- Myself; Yourself --> I'm watching it now, some parts of it are 'meh' but some parts are funny, it's romance. I'm finishing it since it's only 13 eps

Somewhat similar to Naruto
- Shaman King
- Bleach

-----------------
Some personal favorites that you might like

- Ah! My Goddess
- Saiyuki + Saiyuki Reload
- Gundam Seed + Gundam Seed Destiny
- Boys Be
- Fushigi Yuugi (did I spell that right?)
- Code Geass

---------------
Oh, and Legend of Korra if it counts.

Toradora for your interests.

As for the top tier of anime;

1) Code Geass
2) Full Metal Alchemist and Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood
3) Gundam SEED, Wing, 00, Unicorn (although my favourite is Gundam SEED, older gundam fans like unicorn better?)

Other mentions include Fate/Zero, Steins; Gate, Soul Eater, Tiger & Bunny, Prince of Tennis.

Also Fairy Tail is good if you're into Mainstream. Personally, Rave Master was better but the anime adaptation wasn't amazing. But Rave Master manga kicks Fairy Tails ass anyday
