We need to protect even the weaker members of our community. The internet is filled with scum, and people should be protected from that, so I can understand it means limiting some of our freedoms. I'd rather have everybody forced to only use certain image hosting websites, than risking to witness the unforgettable. I won't go in depth on what that may be, but let's say 'stuff happens' occassionally on the official forums. In addition, you could also use an online service, called ScanURL (can't link, sorry). It scans the URL for phishing, malware and more. It's easy to use if you don't want to open a weblink, before having some reassurance it won't put your computer safety at risk. Ofcourse it won't do anything about offensive pictures, but the internet is like the Wild West, so you may encounter bad pictures on pretty much any place of the internet at any time you attempt to open an unknown weblink to an image.

And if @Thiefy996 feels limited in their surroundings, due to how it seems like s/he's interested in a more mature environment, might I suggest an other MS fansite, called Southperry? The mods there are less focused on limiting: "which sites can we link to" and "stuff we can say". Compared to Basilmarket, that is. However, I do think they need to be more strict on Basilmarket, due to how the forums get corrupted with offensive or trollish content, more often than any other fansite.
ScanURL, that's one to remember. Thanks.

South Perry is where many Basilers go to once they've outgrown Basil. It's a good alternative to Basil if you're looking for a place with a more mature userbase and (therefore) less strict rules.
I suppose it is against the rules to name one's own age (it falls under personal info, right?), but has there been any attempt to check how many users of Basil actually ARE on the younger side? I get the feeling there's a majority of - well, not "mature" people from the mind, but still old enough to know how to handle their inturnets. Less related to "which sites can we link to" and more to "stuff we can say" because sometimes it feels like we're in kindergarten.

And those people get what they deserve. Computers are not toys, they're tools, and as such should be handled with care. Everybody knows they're not supposed to run with sciccors, so they should also be able to understand what to do while using a computer.
Rule #6 is limited to information that you don't want a random stranger to know, like your home address and stuff. Age and even birthday were taken out some time ago (probably because you don't need to use your birthday to delete characters any more), but the rules page was never updated. The page is pretty darn out of date anyway, since some bullet points aren't valid any more at all. >_> I did see some "How old are you" polls and the average age seemed to hover at around 15-17, with a pretty big chunk for 12-14 as well.
I've always felt kind of awkward about this particular site not being allowed.

I agree that people need to educate themselves on how to use a delicate instrument like a computer and I often faceplant at the things people do and with to them, but though I'd definitely give them a "You had it coming, you ignoramus", I wouldn't go as far as to say they deserve it. Well, I found out that's a cultural thing of sorts. My country has a culture of giving second chances (sometimes goes over the top with it IMO).
I don't know if today's secondary schools still teach computer science. If they don't, they definitely should.
Anyway, I'm off to sleep. I wish you all a ride in Fata Morgana and a nice weekend.

But when you're using a power saw or scissors you don't have malicious people trying to make you cut off your arm or poke out your eye by posting fake links to power saw malware or scissors phishing sites trying to make them run with scissors.

The fact that there are people actively trying to harm others through their computers is enough reason to have another layer of protection for those who don't understand the ins and outs of what goes on "under the hood" of their computer tools.

Theoretically agreed, but "idiots" are often confused with 13-year-olds with little to no computer-experience outside their DS3 and who have no clue what kind of links they're clicking or what file extensions mean. Basil is full of young kids who would indeed erase Windows if you told them to or who'd gladly click an unsafe link if promised a reward. >< Not entirely opposed to the "school of hard knocks" idea, not sure if Basil should be such a school, though (well, to some extent it already is).
Gosh, I borrowed a laptop some time ago and it was full of gunk. The person who had used it previously had deleted a stupid program before browsing, because it kept sending pop-up messages that annoyed him. The "stupid program" had been the virus scanner. Some people are VERY ignorant about computers.

Regardless, push with the extention of 'jpg', 'png', 'gif', 'pdf' could be allowed.

You'd have to be an idiot to open a push.exe link.

@Cast The first one is blocked because it's NOT just a picture posting site, it's a file-sharing site where you can host ANYTHING and link to it. That includes keyloggers, viruses, trojans and other kinds of malware trying to scam people into clicking your link and infecting them with god knows what kind of crap. And yes, it's happened here on Basilmarket.
It's a nice lazy way to post pictures and if that's all it did it would be OK, but it's too dangerous the way it is now.

The second one is like everyone above said... people use link shorteners to try to hide all kinds of garbage, including both the stuff that was mentioned along with the dangerous stuff like keyloggers, etc.

Once again, it's why we can't have nice things.
Can you post dirty pics with the allowed ones?
You can on imgur. I remember somebody going on the comments and posting a whole album of "adult"(the word I want to use isn't allowed) gifs on every thread a few months back

Pretty much because people used push to post anything from pr0n to grossout/shock pics, or used tinyur to hide their scam links.

I get get this. Why hasn't mrbasil censored the rest of the image hosting websites like imgur?

Because you can pretty much screen shot anything and post it on basil.
Lets say basil banned site XYZ and the pictures on it. I'll go screenie that content and post it here using push or tinyurI.
