And so the student becomes the master

It seemed only yesterday that I was a wide eyed young teenager sitting in my very first university lecture, never did I dream that in a few short years I would get to cross the podium and actually stand in front of these wide eyed teenagers as a lecturer. Yep, in a few short hours I will be giving my very first lecture on Advanced Molecular Biology at a university. Not going to lie to you, I am a little bit nervous.

@BoredAF:
Yeah this is where PM comes in, to identify potential resistances ahead of administering the adjuvant therapy. This way you immediately discard therapies that are known to be resistant to a particular subset of cancer cells with that particular (epi)mutations. As far as growth after treatment, it's case dependent. The other problem is toxicity, there is only so much the body can handle in terms of cancer drugs, hence you can't just keep pumping people with new drugs if one fails.

@BoredAF:

I could not answer the first question, I honestly don't know how funding is distributed from non-government agencies. As for how far away, well I think we are long way from completely eradicating cancer, this is because of the heterogeneity withing cancer, not only between cancers, and between individuals but withing an individual. If you look at a cancerous mass withing an individual there would be hundreds of thousands of cancerous cells, each slightly different from each other because each time the replicate they acquire more (epi)mutations. Any one of these cancerous cells can be resistant to any given drug on the market, so it's very common for a particular therapy to kill off most of the tumour only to have it grow back because a small portion of cells were resistant to the drug. This is our biggest challenge, figuring out hot to deal with heterogeneity within cancer.
@dimo: I'm not sure if I remember this correctly or not but isn't PM regarding cancer much more expensive than other conventional methods for not necc a better outcome?
Not really, the whole idea behind it is to do the opposite, inexpensive tests to tell you about a) likelihood of relapse b) likelihood of progression and c) response to various adjuvant therapies.
Congrats, knew you had it. So, will you get a perm position out of this?
Not sure yet, have a 2nd lecture in a months time on Towards personalized medicine in cancer", so I guess I will find out after that.

Went really well, even had the dean of the faculty come down to watch who congratulated me on "doing such a fine job at such a young age"

The best of luck to your future endeavors mate. It's far from an easy journey but the reward at the end is well worth the time spent.
Wait you're a college professor?
I am on a trial I guess, giving two lectures as part of a Advanced Molecular Biology course, one on Advanced Methods in Structural Biology and one one Personalized Medicine in Cancer. If I do well I will be given a permanent invited speaker position.
