Super Smash Bros Brawl Online Play

I've been playing Super Smash Bros Melee a lot recently just for old times sake, and I was thinking about getting Brawl since I remembered hearing that you can also play it with Gamecube controllers..

Anyways, I was wondering:
does Brawl include the ability to play online matches? If so, is it (still) active at all?
Is lag an issue?

if anyone wants to buddy me here to try some matches once I get the game, that'd be cool too.
thanks.

I'd love to but I don't have a Wii U or that new DS.

I think I'll just get Brawl from one of my friends and try it out just for kicks

The Wii doesn't have the best online multiplayer... It's better to add friends using friend codes and discuss through skype since Wii doesn't have a headset mic feature. It's fun nonetheless when playing with friends. However, the public time-restriction is a pain in my opinion.

Yeah, I frequently Brawl on wi-fi mode. The team match seems to be active 24/7, I can find a game at whether its early in the morning, during school, or after midnight. I'm not sure about the free-for-all mode though. Yeah there's lag every now and then.
