Internet Gaming Addiction. Is the struggle real?

I recently read some information about things listed in the new psych diagnostic manual, and I was wondering if you believe internet addiction is something psychology could consider a disorder. One of the subtypes is called internet gaming disorder. I would like to hear your perspectives about this, as often I hear people say that they are addicted to this game for one reason or another, and I have noticed people who "quit" tend to relapse, returning to the game yet again, even if they don't enjoy it.
I want to know, from your understanding personally, whether or not you think internet addiction, could or should be considered a legitimate psychological issue?

A lot of people complain about how much they dislike changes, but don't quit. Why do you think this is? Why do you play the game? What would it take to make you quit permanently. If you are an on and off player, why did you return? Do you feel like you would be living a better life if you didn't play it, or do you think it may be compulsive for people as a coping mechanism (if so, please respond below)?

Acctually I was watching a video that kinda pertains to this a while ago.

Also to answer the end of your question which I totally overlooked. I still play this game because out of
all the games I ever played, this one has one of the best customization options and character growth rate
which I love in any game(getting to max lvl>getting better armor>working towards a goal). If I could compare
my feelings for ms to anything it would be alcohol. If you have tasted alcohol you know it goes down very nice
and gives you a great feeling but that bitter aftertaste can almost make you commit suicide. Also the investment
put in the game which I am hoping to get atleast half of it when I officially quit which will be soon since grad school
and all will kill my time. Personally I would quit right now if I got hacked or boomed my weapon or offhand.. Honestly~

If I remember correctly, they were discussing grouping a bunch of things together and calling it addictive personality or something. Anyways, here is some specific info about what they said about gaming addiction:

The studies suggest that when these individuals are engrossed in Internet
games, certain pathways in their brains are triggered in the same direct and intense way
that a drug addict's brain is affected by a particular substance. The gaming prompts a
neurological response that influences feelings of pleasure and reward, and the result, in
the extreme, is manifested as addictive behavior.

It is but it kinda isn't. I guess you can compare it to social media which everyone seems to feel is
normal and is usually done on a fairly daily basis obsessively. Though there are people who take
gaming to far and anything can become obsessive if done in large volumes constantly. But to answer
it clearly I guess I would say yes it could be.

internet gaming disorder... mhmm

sounds like just another disorder made up on spot for people who dont know how to manage ones time properly...
i wouldnt call it a disorder at all tho... just a combination of problems such as depression ect showing itself

in terms of real life is uninteresting and games are 1000x more interesting

indeed would make one interesting disability clam if they made it real @headphones
but that would be a expensive one for them to game one needs money and games are getting more expensive
used to be like 20$ for new game and now its like 60$ in like 4 more next gen consuls games will be like 100$ ea...

but if thay made it real it would have to be called something like idk
video gaming disorder or something like that... (lol electronic device disorder? tha would cover just about everything including people who text each other in same room sitting next to each other... )

I can see it as a gateway to cope with real life issues and transgressions like an alcoholic that drinks to cope with social disorders and other life issues. Though its not completely unhealthy it does weaken social aptitude in real life situations a bit. To be labeled as a psychological disorder seems to be the right way to go but each individual would have so many different reasons for being "addicted" to gaming or the internet it would be hard to test and set a healing regimen for each person due to different reasons for being addicted to the game or internet. Though to note, you can't make a pill for everything it's best off leaving it alone since its not negatively affecting anyone within the outside world in a harmful way. It's about half and half for me i suppose.

I tried quitting when Unleashed came out, but came back 7 months ago. During that time, I only generated 200b profit, and am keeping thousands of items on several dozen characters. Perhaps I should clean up

An individual with this problem often has other "life issues" besides an obsession with a particular game/gaming on a whole.
Their gaming addiction is usually only the tip of the iceberg.

Oh yeah. Burnout and withdrawal are notable.

Definitely related to Sunk Cost when some players complain but don't quit.

I want to know what are the criteria(s) to be classified as an 'internet addiction' or as a 'gaming disorder.' How long do you have to be on? How long must it persist?

I assume that it must effect your daily life in some way, like every disorder in the DSM. However, how will they diagnose something like that? It just seems kind of vague to me right now. Would a professional gamer be diagnosed with gaming disorder (addiction) if they play 9 hours a day, like those professional league of legends player? Would a person who works at home and over the internet be diagnosed with internet addiction?

In my honest opinion, I would say it can be a legitimate psychological issue. Like drug addiction, I believe there could be internet addiction. But, to specify someone with an internet addiction should be very very specific.
