There are people who think it is and there are people who think it isn't. The low carbon emission is a characteristic of renewable energy, but then there is the uranium.

some renewable energy is more expensive to make and takes wayyyy too long to make it efficient and catch up with everyone. People don't like change and whatnot. Even if it's for the best people won't get used to the change for a very long time which may make the new energy source not succeed.

I actually wrote a ten page paper a year and a half ago on alternative energy sources for a mock political party and ended up deciding on thorium reactors. The major problem with them of course is public perception of anything that happens to have the word nuclear associated with it.
