they'll never know if you have skipped class.

It depends on the college. Some take it more seriously than others. But yeah, if you have great grades, i dont think it will matter as much.

For admission purposes it doesn't matter, they only see your marks.
Okay guys I think we should establish if OP is talking about:

High school attendance and its impact on applying for college
University lecture attendance and its impact on grades

I'd really like to know this before I look a bit silly
He's talking about high school attendance, and if colleges care how much class you missed IN HIGH SCHOOL.
Lol.

not important at all as long as you have the grades.
I've missed over 1 month of classes consecutively (illness), currently in gr 12. A University has no right to deny you acceptance if you are ill, or skip a few classes every once in a while. As long as you can maintain a good average they will look past missed school days.
Why would a university have no right to deny you if you skip classes? You're attendance rate is just a number like your gpa. They even give minorities different acceptance rates/scholarships so clearly they aren't afraid to discriminate between people. In my lab course you fail the lab if you miss 2 labs regardless if you have medical excuse. Universities probably wont care but you can't say "they have no right to"

high school attendance does not matter unless you have enough truancies to go on probation

No. Because students have personal and medical reasons that make them miss numerous days of school. Colleges will not punish nor extinguish resources to distinguish from those that have legitimate or illegitimate reasons for absents, they're businesses. Its use is for your school in case they have to make an administrative decision on a students academic progression. This is too cute.

I've been to two economics lectures this semester.

Come to think of it, with the exception of my super hard math class, I only go to lecture to see all my acquaintances.

Like ^ said honestly if you can get the class notes online then some people feel they don't need to attend....but honestly some stuff will be missing since the prof explains things more clearly so people can understand....it's easy to miss a class if its in a lecture hall with 300-600 people....but when you're assigned to TA's don't count on it because attendance is taken and some part of it actually goes to your grade

How bad are we talking about? I skipped maybe twice a month and still made it into a program. I'm pretty sure grades would take priority, so if you have excellent grades it would pretty much absolve you of whatever skipping you did.

I'm speculating attendance becomes a problem when they'e actually arranged to meet with your guardians at some point to discuss your skipping. This happened to only one person I knew and he never applied to college so I don't know how it would affect you.

Depends on the professor and the type of class. If you're in a lecture hall (usually lower level classes) some professors don't take attendance. I went to literally three classes of environmental sustainability and got an A in the class. Certain professors are really strict and you can't miss a class. I had an Literature professor that would take a letter grade off if you missed his class.. My intermediate accounting professor said that he would withdraw people (he actually did..) from the class for skipping as the class was jam packed.
