What to wear when applying for jobs?

I have zero experience, and plan to go job hunting tomorrow. I know for interviews you wear full formal, but when actually applying (at places like Macy's and JCPenny) would this be a fine look, or is it too formal/not enough?

Also, I plan on actually talking to their manager and making sure they know I'm applying, brief conversation blah blah blah, is that good approach? Any extra tips?

Do they expect you to be good-looking or something?

I wore a polo shirt and tan Dockers and they hired me as a courtesy clerk.

nah this is old man boomer talk. for anything corporate just apply online. throw together a resume and that's about all you can do. prepare to be do a lot for no reward.

you should go in and talk to people at places only if they're local and independent. look for interesting places. don't stick to target and best buy.[/quote]

yea this is pretty much it. My manager gets pissed off when people bother her to hand in resume, even though that's always the number one tip I read online for job hunting. Outfit looks good though.

I beg to differ. All of the jobs I applied for commented on my cover letter. No one writes them for crappy entry-level retail jobs and they really appreciated the effort I put into my writing.. granted I applied to smaller shops rather than department stores

Yes, DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME WRITING COVER LETTERS.
Since you're looking for a job during the seasonal period, they won't bother looking at it because employers need workers pronto.

Dress to impress. That outfit is fine, I see workers in Macy's and JC Penny's using that kind of attire anyways.
In the end, schedule is key no matter how qualified or unqualified you are.

@Maypurstori Write a cover letter. A good one
Then ask for some kind of hiring manager/supervisor to hand your application to
Everything else you listed is great and your outfit is on point
You'll do great

I did the same with no experience and got job offers from J. Crew, Lacoste, Armani Exchange, and Calvin Klein. Ended up choosing J. Crew because of the non-comission based salary
Recently offered a position at GANT but I unfortunately had to turn it down..

Important things for retail jobs: Excellent customer service, detail and goal oriented, and bringing up loss prevention policies

Good luck!

Calling out the manager/boss only works if you can impress him/her in <5 minutes.

That character is male, actually. It's a reference to BaileyJay.

Thanks for all the good-lucks and tips btw to everyone.

Seems a bit formal for a retail job but it's better to overdress than underdress. Good luck

Firm handshake, Dont ask about salaries, Dont ask when will you call me, smile when walking in and also smile when leaving, tell that your weakness is you hate picking up slack of your teammates as in you would be a team member but you hate if your team members slack off and you have to end up doing their work for em.
