I thought the movies were really bad (barring 1.0). It's as if the plot only works if you assume the entire audience are complete airheads.

No. I don't think it's worth it. You're better off watching the movies.

Evangelion is the complete opposite of typical. Watch it.

I watch it for the MECH fights.

There is nothing typical about Evangelion at all, watch it for sure

This is like one of those animes that other animes reference as parodies, almost like fist of the north star, or Gundam (OG series)

It's mostly enjoyable up until the final two episodes.

I dont even like anime all that much and i enjoyed it quite a bit
