Steins Gate, Higurashi, Madoka movies (The one i would urge you to watch first), Terror in resonance, the evangelion movies o.o, Umineko no naku koro ni ( I found this one good too, defintely a battle of the minds type of feel)

Oh gawd the plot twists. I agree with everyone on Code Geass, also Psycho Pass was good too

Other series I reccomend are Ao No Exorcist, FMA Brotherhood, KHR!, Durarara, Steins;gate

Code Geass is definitely similar to Death Note... at least by way of "genius,self-centered villian protagonist wanting to take over the world"... though it is more action-oriented... and has giant robots.

Personally, I would recommend Steins; Gate... pretty smart series, lots of interesting plot and character devellopment.

well today I was playing starbound, and if you don't know you can get like instrument items to play songs, which you can also download more of. and this guy plays the clannad/clannad afterstory intros/outros and I really liked that anime and that now brings me to you
so ya clannad. Not really the action-y type anime you might be looking for so ya nothing like death note but still I really enjoyed it i cried at least like a gallon of cri

Uhm, I'll just list a few with different genre to it?

Tokyo Ghoul, 7 Deadly Sins, Akame Ga Kill consist of a lot of blood, fighting and "superpowers". Also, other ones to recommend are really good sports one I ran into;Haikyuu (Volleyball and it's REALLY GOOD), Kuroko No Basket (Basketball), Diamond No Ace (Baseball). Also if you're into vampire things, Owari No Seraph is a good one as well.

Light makes a Cameo in Death Parade.

(actually, though, please watch it, I know like 6 people who've watched it and most of them are Japanese)

On a more serious note, you should watch Legend of the Galactic Heroes. If you end up watching Code Geass (which you should, there are 2 seasons with 26? eps), you'll see a lot of parallels between Lelouch and Reinhard. You start to wonder whether Lelouch was inspired by him.

Code Geass has a ton of plot twists. One of the first anime's I've watched. Especially the ending plot twist.

i feel like these 5 are closest to giving the same atmosphere or "battling minds" feel that Death Note has. just be really wary of the recommendations you get, people seem to think shows like Code Geass are similar just bcause they have morally grey protagonists.
