Always have a fork in your room. I find that one is enough if you wash it

Also depending on you and/or your roommate, you'll probably want some febreeze.

I have some tips for you! ( I finished my first year of college last year! )
1) Academics: You are at college to get your education, do not forget that. Make sure you go to classes, study for exams early, go to office hours and ask questions when you have them. Finals are hard so please study a lot. Don't have that "Im transitioning to college life mentality" as your excuse to not do great your first year. During your first year, you are generally taking the prereq courses for your majors as well as general education courses, so they should be easy, so make sure your GPA is as high as you can but DONT stress out. Do your best get help if you need! Speak to your academic advisors/counselors for plans on what courses you will be taking throughout the 3-4 years of college. Don't worry about switching majors! Major something that you want to major in
2) Involvement: Get Involved! Join Organizations, Clubs, Greek Life, Churches, etc. I would join at least 2 Different organizations and get involved in them! You can gain valuable experience, make awesome friends, learn a lot more about yourself, and just have fun! Join orgs that you were involved in during high school to keep on building on what you did as well as join new things and explore different hobbies you never tried before! College is a time to explore and get to know things you never learned about yourself.
3) Dorming: This may or may not be your first time living outside of your home with a roommate (or two). Get to know your roommates, and the people that live around you as you will see them the most. It is so important to be open-minded, to understand that everyone is coming from different backgrounds with different interests, and just respect one another. Learn your own boundaries, know what you are willing to do/try and what is off-limits for you. Build relationships! Especially the first month in college where everyone is trying to find group of friends because sooner or later people are going to have their "group" and aren't as open to making new friends ( unless you join orgs which helps). Make sure you communicate with your roommates, what rules you want to set up, things like brining people over, using each others stuff, etc. If something is bothering you, don't just ignore it, as it will keep building and building on itself, but instead let your roommate know nicely, and find a way to solve it. Get to know your RA, they are a great resource for any questions you have or things on campus.

Learn to have fun, relax, find yourself, and make great lasting friendships! Keep in touch with your old friends from high school, and give your parents a call at least twice a week to let them know you are fine College is very independent, so you are making your own choices so make the right ones! Good luck ^_^ and have fun!

Pick two: Sleep, gpa, social life[/quote]

or Pick GPA, and split sleep & social life. It's what i did. Sure some days i was exhausted and ended up skipping some lectures but it was my 1st year and most of the content besides a couple chapters were grade 12 review so it was nbd.

This. I don't care what anyone says but it's been proven over and over again that you can only pick 2 out of the 3. Speaking from my 5 years of college experience and my friends' experiences.

post your schedules on the wall in your dorm room so you know when you can have your alone time without having to ask your roommate to leave every time

Don't be a loner. Try to befriend and be friendly to many people as possible, especially those on your floor.

You can have both fun and good grades. Just focus, prioritize your time, be friendly with people. College is hard especially far away because it's hard to make friends. I honestly never want to graduate and lose my friends but that's life.
