Is this illegal?

So here's what happened.
I had a pretty nice headset that was like $100, but of course my pos cat chewed a hole in the cord so it got messed up. Oh well, it happened on black friday, so we go out and get a new headset, around the same price. Anyways, I come home, listen to a song to test them out. I wasn't really happy with them so I ask my dad if we can take them back tomorrow, he says yes. Okay, so I go to make a sandwich. I come back and low and behold they are on the ground with a chew hole in them and no longer working. The cord came all wrapped up, and I plan to bring it back that way, hoping that they won't unravel it and find the hole. Can I get in trouble for doing this or is it on them for not finding it?

Where did you buy it?
Some places have very good return policies.

Just tell them that they came like that when you opened it and the store will be happy to exchange or refund.
I work at Target and we just send it back the the manufacturer as a defect. It's not illegal. Most stores want to have their customers to be happy so they'll come back.

Put your cat in the package instead and then try returning it.

Nah I'm kidding. You could certainly try returning it but they will, and I can assure you, open the packaging and check the product. You could very easily try fixing the cable too and save yourself the embarrassment.

Edit: Did you know they have wireless headsets on the market now? Worth a look...
I left them for less than 5 minutes up on my desk. the last time she did it, it was a really long cord that I never wound back up after unwinding them to reach my bed. So they were kind of in a pile on the floor. These ones were all up high where I didn't expect her to pull them down. Sucks cause she's never done it before. I've left the old ones laying around for so long she never did it until now even though she's in my room like 24/7.
Well, after two headphones, you finally know now to store the wires away no matter what.
Question is, why did you even leave your headphones wide open when you knew your cat would probably break it again?

How would you like buying headphones you thought were new only to find that they're chewed up?
I'm sure they would check it out after and find it. doesn't matter anyways now. I went to unplug them and there was another bite that the detached the jack part.
you'll prolly have to buy them again if they find out or be banned from the store lol.
That is if you paid with credit card or something. If you paid cash, they wont remember and cant find you.
