'A' and 'an' go by the [i]sound[/i] of the first syllable, not by the first letter of the noun. So it's an hour, or an heir, the first letter may be a consonant, but the first syllable is a vowel sound. Likewise, a unicorn, or a university.

Athena = Greek goddess of wisdom and war in Percy Jackson.
Elf = Species of fairy in Artemis Fowl.

I'm pretty sure Kyrin is a mix. There was something about her mom being too mechanical rather than using nature or whatever, so falling for a human wouldn't be too farfetched.

Athena's an Elf, but I believe she was raised my Mercedes' faeries, right? She may have been a bit confused when she was younger, or just viewed herself more as a faery in culture than in biology?

I think there was a story in there about her parents having a mix. She's both elf and fairy.
