As far as mainstream hip hop/rap is concerned, there's a noticeable difference between now and then as far as lyrical content goes. I didn't like [i]every[/i] song that came out back then, but there was definitely a lot more variety with style and lyrics. I mean, nowadays, 70% of the songs I hear on hip hop stations out here start with "mustard on the beat" because DJ mustard made the beat. And 70% isn't even that much of an exaggeration, one guy is making most of the music for the mainstream hip hop/rap music now. That says a lot for his success, sure, but a lot of it is starting to sound the same and that's all bad.

Although this is only speaking for hip hop/rap. Sure, there's always some nostalgia involved, looking at the past, but you can't really say hip hop is going uphill lol.
