people who drive

so last week i got into a pretty bad car accident causing internal damage on the right side, right hand corner of the front bumper and lamps to be busted and a tire punctured. the steering wheel wasn't aligned with the tires cause the axles were damaged and i was notified today that the engine also needs to be replaced. the estimate comes down to over $20,000 which is nearly the cost of the entire car's worth so the dealership repair shop is refusing to fix it. i asked the estimator for the reason for the high price and he said that parts are expensive. their only offer is a $24,000 cheque for the car and they will sell the undamaged parts and i only have until tomorrow to make a decision. i've had bad experiences at local repair shops with them shadily replacing expensive parts from another car with cheap ones so they're likely not an option. i don't know if i can get the car towed to another shop for an estimate either due to the time restriction. this is a 2009 mercedes benz c230 sport 4 dr sedan in vancouver, canada and i don't know if i'm getting ripped off with $24,000. i've been driving it since i was 16 so i really don't want to see it get taken apart. my heart feels like it's being torn out as we speak

as you can see it's not that bad but they did say "internal damage" and i don't know jack about cars. i would go into detail about the pricing but i obviously can't due to confidentiality reasons. if the car gets sold i probably won't drive again for a few years so i can avoid getting into more accidents and the cost of insurance can go back down. even though i've lost most of my confidence with driving, not having this car will cause a lot of inconvenience since i won't be able to pick up my younger siblings from work late at night anymore (there's another vehicle at home but i'm not authorized to operate it). i apologize if we sound spoiled in any way but i do prefer picking them up myself instead of having them take public transit when it's dark out so my parents can rest at home or go do their own thing. why does crap have to be so damn expensive though *insert curse word here*

any non trolly advice and perspectives are appreciated. please also share similar experiences if you have any or look at this as a blogmarket sob story semi wall of text cause it is and this is basilmarket after all. thanks for reading
@hornynippies: word? i only hit the front right corner so i don't understand how the internal damage is that bad. there were some scratch marks along the side as well but they're barely noticeable. they're charging $620.17 for paint and i be like "b word where is that paint even going" and the taxes on the west coast are insane
Yeah if you don't know anything about cars and they notice it, they will do anything to fill their pockets. I have a friend who's good with cars and he could take a look at it but it's too far away. And about the high insurance thing... It's higher for younger people because they have more accidents since they're inexperienced drivers compared to older people. In Belgium if we have an accident the insurance cost raises and when we don't have one for a long period of time we get rewarded for it and the insurance goes down. That's why a lot of young people put the insurance cost on their parents' name so it's less. Maybe you knew this already but I wanted to share this info with you or other people here.

@natalie: keep in mind these repair shops always over charge so they'll try to deceive you by saying this, that and this are worst off then they really are. That's not to say your car isn't messed up inside, because i'm pretty sure they're legally required to tell you if it is but i would suggest getting a second opinion as well.

i'm glad you're relatively ok though, should probably be more safe when you drive though but i understand, that's life. Everyday can't be your best day

@colour: giiiiiirrl damn
@halfway: it's not safe cause confidentiality. basil has a few bright people sometimes
@aznunlt: deciding to sell it but there's no doubt that they're ripping me off. i need to find the right price for the car so i can bargain (argue) with them. can't settle with a cheap alternative when my parents refuse to get anything but a luxury car. sorry for sounding spoiled again
@abyssmind: they only gave me one day to decide whether or not i should take the offer. my dad thought that a mercedes repair shop would do the car justice
@ruew: i wish i could show you guys the detailed report. there are big numbers everywhere for parts that i didn't even think were broken. my windshield was fine but apparently it's cracked
@spiritbag: my dad's been looking at audis
@ibeupinkradia: ikr?
@syrupislate: if only we had something like that here
@xdarkshynobi: you seem to really know your stuff but unfortunately like i mentioned before, i'm a car noob. they're claiming that repairs are necessary for the front bumper, front end panel and lamps, radiator support, front body and windshield, front body interior sheetmetal, front suspension, some manual entries and those are only the parts. shop materials, labour costs and taxes are already well above $10,000. if only you were here
@shivam101: gonna do that but i just don't know if $24,000 is the right price for it. i don't think they're offering enough but then again the car is no longer drivable. i looked at prices for the same car and they're relatively the same but the mileage on all of them are twice or three times as much
@tiesandbowties: lmao can you not
@xylyls: yes it was and i'm deeply ashamed. i could have killed someone or killed myself
@gyroscope: i didn't get enough sleep, music was too loud, sun was in my eyes, crashed into a parked car, slid downhill and went up a curb at around 25-31 mph (converted for you americans). i agree that it doesn't look like much harm was done and i feel fine myself but i guess it's all about the internal damages. maybe i'm hurt too but i just don't know it yet
@lettucing: yes'm

ty everyone. i don't think i've ever seen basil stay this serious for the whole thread

I don't think anyone can give you the best possible advice without knowing the full details of the accident, damages, and specifics. Anyways you said you got a in really bad car accident but it seems like just the front right hand corner of the car bummer and front right tire got damaged. How bad was the car accident? Like what happened. Imo $24,000 is way too overpriced to repair it ._.

Was the accident your fault?

I have an e350, and anywhere you go, benz repair prices are going to be jacked up. I would say take the cash settlement for the car, and buy yourself a new one. I'm not sure about vancouver, but you could get a 2007 c320 in california for around 15-20k easily.

If your rims are damaged, take a rubber hammer and hit the rims; where it is in contact with the tires. Check for leaks by pouring water around the rims. Do this on the inside and outside.
The tire rods could be bent. Your alignment is cheap at max it should only be like 80$. The reason it is so much is because you are asking them what you need done.
Tell em you want your alignment checked radiator checked suspensions/coil. If the engine is rumbling through the dashboard just ask for a motor mounted to be replaced. I highly doubt you got a problem with the transmission. You are a girl so it's obviously not a gasket problem. Your master cylinder could be messed up(does your breaks lock up). What is wrong when you are driving it? Since it looked like you got hit from the side. Definitely get the ball bearrings looked at. Next time you go to the shop don't let em bully you!
Ask the, the cost for
Ball bearrings
Tire rods
Radiator
Alignment
Motor mounts
That is like the only legitimate issues I can see without driving the car.
I doubt the axels are damaged. It's a Benz they are meant to last. When I seen the mechanic work on a damaged axel he brought out the blow torch and a welding mask. He literally burned the axels until it wasn't bent. The axel was rubbing against the suspension/coil. Get the rotors looked at. The tires look like 215-235 60-70 17s a brand new set is barely 200!
do you have a highschool with an auto shop course near by? If you we able to wait a tiny bit until school starts (if it hasn't already) you could probably take the car there. The teacher doesn't make money off of the work, and the labor is free. I know it seems a bit scary to trust teenagers with fixing a car, but everything gets inspected by the teacher before it's let out of the garage. If I ever have car trouble I take it to the highschool by my house, and it normally gets worked on the day I drop it off, never had a bad experience with highschool auto shops. Not to mention you only pay for parts.
That's really good idea

Take the $24k, spend like $5k buying a decent used car, pocket the difference.

if you need to pay $20,000+ to fix your car, forget about it, way too expensive

sucks. I also had minor incident. Scratched my mom's camry on the side and it had black marks on the side. We went to like 8 autoshops. 1st autoshop said it will cost 2k for dis minimal damage. and at the last workshop we settled to around 600 dollars. Yeah it is pretty expensive.

I got into a bad accident a long time ago, complete write off on a Toyota Supra. What happened was I was turning at a set of traffic lights and the car in the lane next to mine cut into my lane mid turn and I had no choice but to brake and because the roads were wet and I may have took the corner too fast my car slid into the side wall.
Pretty much my whole left side was gone. Left wheels were damaged, axles snapped, brake discs cracked, engine was knocked out of place and cracked amongst other things in the engine bay.
Long story short it, I was quoted around 18k to repair everything. Which from my perspective is quite reasonable however it wasn't worth it as the car worth was pretty much the same.
To replace an engine alone already costs around 4-5k not including labor costs, then from there they have to rewrire and remap everything connected to the engine. Also replace anything else broken in the engine bay. Then there is fixing all the body panels that were damaged, body paneling is dam expensive.. Then the respray of paint. The undercarriage is probably all messed up too from the shift of parts in the engine so that has to be dealt with too. Also don't forget the minor things too like the lining and fluids that need replacing that can add up.

Also yours is a Mercedes, parts are more expensive. And never forget labor costs, it's not just one man fixing the car it's a whole team, usually with specialists in their field like a body paneller and panel sprayer etc they are not normally within the mechanic workshop and have to be outsourced. Cars are not cheap to repair unfortunately..
My advice would be to write it off.. Just isn't worth it to repair a totalled vehicle.
If you have insurance that will pay you out that would be good. Otherwise.. Settle for a cheap alternative in the mean time.

@wall: i didn't know high schoolers were capable of that. the dealership said that it would require nearly 95 hours of labour ($7,565.67) to fix which i think is bull but my friend said that the work is spread out. please send a car repair boy my way and i'll marry him
@purplewaffles: once you go luxury you never go back. jk but the problem is that i got into an accident twice in a year so the cost of insurance is mad high. it's safest to just not drive at all but i'm really gonna miss it
@hornynippies: word? i only hit the front right corner so i don't understand how the internal damage is that bad. there were some scratch marks along the side as well but they're barely noticeable. they're charging $620.17 for paint and i be like "b word where is that paint even going" and the taxes on the west coast are insane
@sezbeth: the money will probably be going into investing cause my mom doesn't want me to drive anymore

It's a Mercedes; repairs are practically an arm and a leg.

If there really is as much damage as what you're suggesting, then I would just buy another car.

Idk about the prices in Canada but 20.000$ for that sounds way too much.

For $20,000, you might as well buy or put a down payment on a new car. It doesn't have to be a luxury car, just something that you can use for a couple years.
