I failed my road test twice.

So, on Monday, I took my very first road test. I got 21 points off, but I made one critical mistake. When I was turning, I didn't go to the closest lane. I wasn't too sad, because I knew I had made a mistake. I took it the next day, but the reason I failed got me so angry.

The examiner failed me for 'unnecessary' stops. We were at a stoplight and the light turned green. I always always always look twice to see if any stupid people run a red light. I had a family friend who got hit really hard by a driver who ran a red light. So yeah, he failed me for 'ignoring the signs.' Like, it was for less than a second. It made me so angry.

He told me that I was holding up traffic, but no one behind me seemed to care enough to honk their horn at me. I mean, it doesn't for sure guarantee that they weren't impatient, but I think it was a dumb reason to fail me. I was being extra cautious. I didn't want to get hit by a person running a red light.

Now, I'm gonna wait to reschedule my test. My ACTs are coming up, and I'm beyond stressed at the moment. I've even contemplated taking the bus for the rest of my life. The road test was so easy! I don't get it.

Alright, rant over.

How many times did it take you guys to get your license? I really hope I can get mine in under five attempts. T_T

@123abt: Can't find a rx7 that isn't in salvage state(not to mention being Manual tranny MT). At least in my city. Also got it for a steal at 3.7k just needs a new radiator, the guy who own it has some random radiator on it causing the coolant to be expended quickly. Or the pressure inside the engine is messed up due to seals coming loose. The latter one cost 3k lol. I doubt it though engine has been strong af.

Just wrecked my car. I am beyond depressed

A little bit late for my response:

I got mine in one try, so I can't really relate to your situation personally. However, I do think that if you did only wait a second at the light, that's definitely unfair. I have a feeling though that it was longer than the second that you thought it was, and unfortunately if it's happening on a consistent basis (every light), it is legitimate grounds to fail you :x

For the time being, I'd focus on your ACTs first. Just practice on your own time and condition yourself to react a little sooner/scan for cars quicker.

That's so sad joyce. I don't think the instructor nor the "garbage" on the street should be blamed, for it was you that performed tragically on the road. But it's ok buddy. People make mistakes because it's a part of life. GL next time friend. Go to Teutonia instead. Btw, you have 769 more tries. I know u can do it with 768 tries, so don't feel too bad.

I took 3 written tests cause I'm dumb but I passed the road test 1st try LOL I never bothered to really learn the official rules of the road because I essentially picked up everything watching my dad (used to street race as well)

The best way to get good at driving is to just drive. My dad used to wake me up at like 5-6am in the morning and he would say "just drive" I literally would drive until noon time like 2-3 times a month and that forced me to learn how to drive. You didn't mention if you took the test in auto or manual but if you did take it in manual, I'd suggest taking it in an auto because there's all these little rules (in California at least) that say you have to be in gear at all times and all this other junk that I never use when I drive

Here in BC, we take a M/C test for our "L" sign. A year later, we take a road test for our "N" sign. Two years later, we take another road test for our full license.

SUCH A LONG STUPID PROCESS LIKE SRSLY. DGKJFGH. D<

Anyhoo, passed everything the first time. For my last road test, we were on the highway and I ended up speeding most of the way but the guy was chill. C: Had to do both parallel and reverse stall park during both of those tests.
oui.

@silverfoxr: I know the rules of which lane to turn into. I was super nervous, so I accidentally went into the wrong lane. And yeah, I know. If an examiner has to stop you or warn you, it's an automatic fail. I'm a pretty okay driver. Not the best, but it's better than a lot of others on the street.

And thanks for all the tips! I got super nervous the first time. When walking to the parking lot, my legs were legit shaking. The second time, I kept dwelling on my mistakes from the previous test that I screwed up the things I did perfectly the first time round.

Auto failed it my first time, passed second time. Keep trying! It's annoying and time consuming to go to the DMV but it'll be over eventually.

2 for the theory test and 2 for the road test. These examiners are usualy looking at how confident you are while driving, do you know what to do in a certain situation, are you aware of all the cars around you? The more you drive the more you will understand why these tests are designed to be tough. In the end it doesnt matter how good of a driver you are you only as good as the worst driver on the road and its your job to drive better than these countless morons who fluked their road tests.

First and foremost, treat the instructor testing you as word of God - it's in his/her hands that you pass or fail, so don't bother arguing with them.

Second... they were right - you can't hold up traffic at a green light. If you want to look both ways before proceeding, do so while the lights are turning red. You'll be able to tell if someone's going to rush the light like an idiot plus you have about 3 seconds to look both ways. Plenty of time.

So, when taking the test, a good thing to do is to vocalize all of your actions - explain what you are doing/thinking as you are going through the test. This will help the instructor better understand your mindset and might help your score. You should also use common sense. Your first failure showed you lacked the common sense to turn from the turning lane into the proper lane. If the street you are turning onto has 2 lanes, you need to turn into the closest lane. So, if you're turning right onto the 2 lane street, turn into the right lane. If you're turning left, turn into the left lane - both are the closest lane and you won't be cutting across an entire lane of traffic to make your turn and reducing the chance of an accident. See? Common sense. Now, there are the rare chances that you have a 2 (or more) lane street that more than 1 lane allows you to turn. These are usually posted as such with arrows on the road and on signs nearby. In that case, again, common sense. If you're on the far left lane and are turning left, turn into the far left lane. If you are in the right/middle lane that allows you to turn into the left lane, turn into the matching lane (if middle, turn to middle; if right, turn to right). Essentially, follow the logical flow of traffic. That way, you don't cut into someone else's lane and cause an accident.

Essentially, the rules for driving are "how not to cause an accident". Think that way and you should have a much easier time. Follow the speed limit, turn into proper lanes, don't interfere with traffic flow and you should be able to pass.

However, don't be expecting to pass. Sometimes, it just takes a few times. Both myself and my father failed for literally the same reason - going around a city bus dropping off passengers. In my case, I changed lanes, because the lane was ending just beyond the bus stop anyways, but it still counts as passing a stopped bus when you are supposed to stop and wait. Sounds dumb, but what would happen if someone got off the bus, then stupidly ran around the front of it to cross the street? BAM! Accident. Once I realized that, I simply took the test a second time and passed... was a little sloppy in places, but I kept calm and just continued... and the instructor passed me. Simply put, the mistakes were minor and nothing that practice couldn't help with.

Ah... one thing to mention. If the instructor has to literally correct you during a maneuver, you've very likely failed. Most times, instructors will keep quiet until the end about what you did wrong or will tell you after you made the mistake as something to remember. If they tell you during a maneuver, you've very likely performed a road violation and have failed automatically. Still, continue the road test as nothing has happened (unless told to stop the car and not continue driving) for the sake or practice. Do not get discouraged on your mistakes - remember them, but don't dwell on them during your test. You will just make more mistakes.

Took me twice to pass.

The first time, everything was going super smooth. Finished the test itself and was en route back, which is when the examiner engaged in a conversation with me non-stop. Being naive, I got really into the convo as he brought up the topic of semiconductors (which I was extremely interested in at the time). BOOM LITERALLY THE DRIVING CENTER WAS IN MY SIGHT AND I RUN A STOP SIGN. Automatic fail, and he told me I would've gotten a 93 too.....

My fault, but still piss off.

@naruto: The first examiner I had was very kind. I screwed up big time immediately coming out of the parking lot. He said to me, "It's alright. We'll start over on a clean slate." He calmed me down a lot. The second examiner I had was a grumpy old white man. I tried to make convo with him, but he gave me short responses.

@fradddd: Yeah, I agree. The exam is very easy, but it's the examiners. If you get a bad one, there's no way of you passing.

tbh if you're semi decent at driving, your examination grade really depends on your instructor
i'm an ok driver but by no means excellent (only 8 hrs of practice, fam doesn't own a car); during my test my examiner used her emergency brakes and i made a wrong turn which warrants an automatic fail. at the end of the exam, she told me by no means did i pass but she was gonna let me slide. when i drove back w my driving school instructor, they told me "luck was on my side" bc the examiner i got "never passes anybody even if they've already been driving for years" lol

so i definitely recc getting comfortable with your instructor; strike small yet genuine conversation before you get on the road. most of these proctors are middle aged people who don't want to be there (it's the dmv, cmon) so even asking how their day's been can set the mood. goodluck

Mine was unbelievably easy what are you guys talking about.
In mine we just went out of the driving school parking lot, drove a bit to some neighborhood and then drove around in the neighborhood, then went back.

@killeem: Six months? Really? What state are you from? I don't think it's like that from where I am. I'll probably look deeper into it. Thanks for the tips!

I did everything perfectly. My y-turns for both times were perfect. My uphill parking was great. I always stopped at the uncontrolled intersections. Apparently, many people fail because they don't stop.

I passed my test in one try, partly because I knew the location of the test course. I knew the location of where the parallel parking was going to be, etc. so I practiced couple times on my own until I mastered it. I think I had like 3 points off for not making a complete stop once, but that was about it. Just relax, drive according to the speed limit, and you'll be fine!

It also depends on the examiner. My mom, for example, failed her test three times in a row by a same examiner for no apparent reason. For her fourth exam, she had a different examiner and she passed the test.

Restrain your personal habits until after the test. Don't assume that other drivers will always make a careless mistake. Be vigilant on your test, but don't make it excessive.

1 drive 2 online exams. Dunno how to parallel/backwards park
I grew to drive like a fast city goer that speeds up to prevent anyone from cutting me in a mild suburban community

i took it today, i was super nervous. then i saw the biggest smile on this woman's face that was giving me the test and i knew i was finna pass, lmao. she was so nice.

i think it's like 2~3 seconds where if you don't go when the light goes green it's an automatic fail here. it's stupid and i can fully understand why you would wait. my mom and i were driving to practice parallel parking and someone f****ing ran a red light and i slammed on the breaks. just go picture perfect when taking the test and adjust once you have the license..

good luck, i heard if you fail the 3rd time you have to wait 6 months to take it again. practice practice practice.
