Looking a lot younger than actual age
yeah so I have this issue where people think I'm a lot younger than my actual age. I'm afraid this may affect future job prospects and etc (possibly male prospects, ones my age might think I'm under 18 or w/e)
I know many people say that's a good thing, i'll look young when i'm old, but as for right now, it's not helpful.
I'm currently 19, and on monday I had to go to the dmv, and one of the secretaries insinuated that I was 15-16, and I was like...i'm over 18. and she said oh, sorry you look young. and that's actually not one of the bad situations.
my senior year of high school (i was 17) i went out to eat at a buffet with my dad and the waiter person said to my dad, "she's about 11, right?" ..even though i was wearing a shirt that said class of 2012 on it. sigh.
some lady said i was going to grow to be as tall as my mother, and I said I stopped growing since I was 17 (at that point in time). she said she thought I was 12.
and last thanksgiving some lady asked me what grade I was in (i was 18 then) and I said i was in college, and she said she thought I was still in middle school..
and many more situations involving kids' menus and high schoolers thinking i'm younger than them.
i'm 5' 4", so not even that short. i don't usually wear make up, which would prob help, but i'd rather have an extra 15 min or w/e of sleep than apply make up lol. I don't dress like i'm in middle school or anything either. for last year's thanksgiving, i deliberately tried dressing up a little, had on a bit of jewelry and put my hair partially up, etc.
I act pretty mature, at least around strangers, profs/classmates and co-workers/supervisors, for the most part anyway. but outside of work, I have issues when people don't get to know me and just judge by appearance.
suggestions?
tl;dr
19 and looking like i'm in middle school. suggestions?
its your height. Because you're short. 5'4 is short. Its like a grade 10 height. Wear some heels.
that aint short for a female...not here in canada anyway
5'3 is the average here for women
@Zoneflare4: Meanie butt lol
pics or u lier
@SmilingCurse: I consider it to be a sport
I think you look pretty normal, don't see the problem really.
@DxidunnoxD: I guess you can't see it, but I do wear a nice watch lol. and i wear contacts cuz glasses are annoying (I go to the gym every day, and sweaty face + glasses = ew. and i can't really see w/o them)
@lilazninja: someone once did not know who was older, my brother or I. he's 7 years younger. ;~;
@Zoneflare4: ...omfg LOL Travis y u do dis 2 me
My parents used me to get a discount.
Haha, this is awesome. <3
oh thats good to know next time I need someone to get into some tight spaces for me
Enjoy awesome skin while its awesome? Better than being asked if your younger brother is your son >: I am also 19
You don't even look that young... You do look like a high schooler though. If you really care that much, which I don't think you should, then dress more professionally or use accessories like glasses or a nice watch?
@SmilingCurse how is it like being short? is there any advantages and disadvantages of it?
for being tall, i get compliments that i can be a model, but then there are guys that you might
be taller than or might not be into tall girls.
Yeahh, it may be annoying, But if you can get the point that you're 19, you should be good.
@Twerkable: I kinda do, but it does get a bit annoying when people refuse to believe me haha.
And the fact I am insanely short.
And a bunch of child predators will be into you because you look 11?
Instead of telling you how to look older by changing who you are.
Im just going to say if you're qualified for a job then you'll get it.
As for male prospects.. that shouldnt be a problem really. I think you shouldn't worry too much, everyone will get older and look older. (Not even a good thing)
Like someone else said, you're asian and possibly living in North America. The average heights in North America will be difference from your own country.
Only thing you can do is accept the fact, try not to get annoyed as much and go on with it.
@icoleslawderp: yes that's what i meant
@abi232: i have no idea. maybe the real issue here is to learn how to avoid those kinds of people
@Wanton: grade 10 height? well i stopped growing in grade 10 so <: most females stop growing around 15-16 years.
@Twerkable: my mother had the exact opposite problem when she was young. when she was 11 people thought she was 18 lol. [she was already 5' 7"]. but now she's in her early 50s and looks like she's in her early 40s.
I am like in the same exact situation as you LOL
People tend to think I'm still 10-12 and it's honestly gotten so annoying lol.
but don't you get called cute alot because of that, venus?
ot: growing up, i looked a bit older then my age because i'm kinda tall but most people
usually added like another 2 years when trying to guess actual age o.o
I have that problem too.
My height is a huge factor to me looking 15 y.o.
I wish I was just a little taller...
That's an alright thing, i'd say.
You can do stuff that's over 18 and pass off as under 18 when u want to.
You can wear a little make up.
You sound like a girl I know. She was annoyed because the other girls around her were much older looking than her when they were the same age. She was more self conscious about her chest size but after she stopped being self conscious, she kinda embraced that part of herself because she was adorable to others.
She's a girl I know that cosplays a lot now and takes a lot of pictures for photo shoots and such.
Well I have the same problem currently 18 and look about 15 or so, don't really mind it anymore since I can proof that im 18 and that.
You look 19? What you on about o.o
First of all, I don't think you look as young as those people are saying.
Changing up my hair a bit and dressing up more was what made me look older between high school and college. Other than those things, I'm not sure what else to tell you. I don't think your height has anything to do with it, though. I'm shorter than you and don't really wear makeup either, and I've never heard that I look young for my age.
its your height. Because you're short. 5'4 is short. Its like a grade 10 height. Wear some heels.

bro, you don't even look young. my inner p-bear was getting pumped up but looking at those pics I would've guessed you were 18-22.
I know how you feel sweetie. I'm 24 and I still get people asking what grade I'm in and such (someone went as low as 15).
I've just gotten to the point where I just roll with it, and I like seeing people's faces when I tell them how old I actually am.
It doesn't make all that much difference in the long run.
It's not much of an issue for me if people mistake me for being 15-16 but man I wish I looked like this then.
How do you run into so many annoying and nosy people? That's the real issue to me.
...dress....more classy? lol idk
@remembrent: I understand that it isnt helpful right now but a natural youthful look is a one time thing and once its gone, its gone for good. Just remember that. If you want an honest method then you should start smoking since it does make you look older, self-destructive but it works from what ive seen in my life-time.
I am like in the same exact situation as you LOL
People tend to think I'm still 10-12 and it's honestly gotten so annoying lol.
honestly looking young at that age is normal for asian girls. i know plenty of 18 y/o asian girls who look very young as well.
I think you look your age. It's hard to tell with asians though, and I am asian.
uh i think u look 19. judging from all the stuff others said i thought u would literally look like 12 years old.
maybe its cuz of ur race because asians have the stereotype of lookin young...which is a good thing
when i was in mah early teens, ppl thought i was over 20. theres this one time when i was workin when i was 17 and this lady who was 27 years old tried to get my number cuz she thought i was her age lol creepy
@ZedsDead
oh ok, good to know
@icoleslawderp:
and her male prospects?
Shes dating a guy at the moment, he's quite handsome imo. I hear they been together for 3years. There are times when you look young, its attractive.
If you really worry about your young looks, just look and dress more sophisticated.
I'm not exactly sure what you mean by male prospects, assuming you mean her chance with males?
It's more like a compliment if you see it differently
Maybe people assume you're younger because if you notice that some middle schoolers seem to be older.
I visited my old elementary once and some of the 6 graders are tall as me ( 5' 2" ) omg.
@ZedsDead
oh ok, good to know
@icoleslawderp:

Its not going to affect you at all... I know my friend who's like 5'5 and shes 22 years old but looks 13 years old. Shes doing fine applying to jobs.

i don't know, maybe i give off a younger person vibe/look younger in person? and i get those comments often enough to be writing about it so unless people are secretly ganging up on me, i think it's kind of a problem
unsure what neoteny is. googled it too.
basically the retention of youthful traits into adulthood.
edit: to clarify, it's not a disease or anything haha

@Arialine:
US. & i don't know, you should tell that to the bunches of people that think i'm 6 years younger than i am or w/e. &like i said, it could be an in-person vibe or look i give off
just carry an id
You don't look 11, you do look about 16 though. There really is no non surgical solution for neoteny than make-up though. Learn how to stop touching your face (bad habit anyway) and be thankful you weren't born a neotonous male.
No offense(?), but you don't look like a middle-schooler to me. You do look a little younger than 19, so I think people are just exaggerating.
I've got the same problem, being 21 and people still think i'm 16. I've tried stuff like dying my hair, carrying designer bags etc but imo that just didn't work, just made me look like one of those tweens desperate to grow up. It comes down to the vibe you give off and how you can carry out intelligent conversations in the end. But yeah, there is no way to stop people from judging you by your appearance. We do have a disadvantage when it comes to internships and jobs though, but it's still possible to score good ones if you're capable enough. I've got a guy friend who looks like he's 16 (he's 20) and he scored an internship at HSBC (which is really quite good).
EDIT: You don't look younger than your age Are you from Australia/America/Canada/whatevs? Because in Asia, you'll fit in alright. I think makeup/dressing right would do wonders to you, since you don't have one of those kid faces
@icemage11: job stuff too. i'm going to be interviewing a lot for a summer job shortly. i'm hoping to intern for a magazine or newspaper.
@ZedsDead: i also have this issue of constantly rubbing my eyes/face, lol. stuff tends to smear and then i get all paranoid about it.
@Quasar: uh. i'd rather not do the first, and my voice is actually on the deeper side compared to other female voices. i sing alto.
@xkillo32: i'm not a fan of abusing the system/taking advantage of things
