I Got Underpaid

I worked Saturday and Sunday nights as a dishwasher at a pub for a month. Hours were 5 - 1 on Saturday, but sometimes staying until 2. Sunday hours were 6 - 11, sometimes getting off around 10:30 or 11:30. Took them a month and a half to get me my cheque, but I finally got it the other day. I haven't cashed it yet because I am positive that they underpaid me.

The cheque is for $407.00 exactly. I was making minimum wage (10.25).

10.25 x 8 hour shift x 4 shifts in total = $328.00
10.25 x 5 hour shift x 4 shifts in total = $205.00

That adds up to $533.00

That is not including the extra hours I may have worked. There was one day, after a 8 hour shift, that I completely forgot to check out. Didn't write it down, nor punch out. I was the last in the kitchen so it didn't even occur to me. The next day, I went in to tell the head chef and she said it was cool. She asked me when I left, I said 1, she said alright I'll write it down. I assumed all was fixed and left. Even with that shift included, I got underpaid, but I don't care if it's 20 bucks. I'm missing over $100 dollars so of course I'm pissed.

My brother is helping me out, since I'm only 16. I'm going to text my boss and let him know that I got underpaid, and if he denies it or isn't willing to meet, I'll call labour board and file a complaint.

What else can I do?

@BoredAF: Pharmacist, NYC. One of the most highly taxed areas of the country. Including city, state, and federal taxes. Not to mention the cost of living here is astronomical.

Ahha when I saw $10.25 I had a suspicion you were from BC. I remember the good old days when minimum wage was $8 and there was also training wages...
Anyways, it's probably taxes such as Canadian Pension Plan, Employment Insurance premiums, and federal and British Columbia provincial tax deductions. Check out the Canadian Revenue Agency site if you want more info.

Do you get unpaid lunch breaks/other breaks? I get 0.5 hrs taken off for every 8 hr shift, so every 8 hrs I actually get paid as 7.5. Then there are other automatic deductions to consider - pension/tax/etc like other people mentioned. Your pay stub should have details on all deductions, and if not, just ask a coworker or two before going to the boss. If you do have to go to the boss, don't be rash and forceful, just be calm and collected and bring up the fact that you want to double check your statement.
Let's trade. I get taxed $500 weekly.
I got about $4,000 taxed automatically out of my last biweekly check, leaving me with about ~5k clean. The higher the wage, the more you get diminishing returns. I'd rather get options and stock or other equity than just wage. Taxes are killin me.

@iDrinkOJ:

It seemed as if you were surprised that income disparity exists. Knowing more micro econ will enlighten you about wage determination. Calm down tough guy.

Could be taxes as other people are saying. Also keep the stub and any time sheets you have for your work

I wouldn't walk up to your boss and say "I KNOW WHAT YOU DID!" You could just have misunderstood how payment works (taxes), or it was an honest mistake. Just calmly go over it with your boss

If you work at a restaurant/pub, you're gonna get gypped one way or the other. What kind of paycheck did you get? Was it a legit company/government check or was it a personal check from the owner?

Restaurants/Pubs work a little differently from other businesses. Most of the time you'll get an "under-the-table-pay-check" which means that you're not really enlisted under government protection and you don't pay taxes like most people do but the property owners will play accountant and deduct taxes unknowingly to fill in a gap.
*Note: the owners have to pay taxes.

A real pay check will show the hours you're making and what is deducted from taxes or other special care. I'm guessin you're getting a personal paycheck from the owners cause that's how it went for me at my first job workin at a restaurant otherwise you'd have more information to give than you already have.

With that said, if you're getting a personal paycheck, you can't really do much except harass the managers to get your moneys worth or quit cause you have no legit documentation of the hours work. There are a lot of people in this world that will try to cheat you or twist things for their benefits; pubs/restaurant work are one of the most places to find people like that, I'm not saying your managers are those but, be cautious or be sorry.

Then again, it's your first job and you're 16 and it's hard to get a job at an early age so consider yourself lucky.

Taxes homie. My first check I was expecting to be like 300$ because I worked 34 hours my first week but only got paid like $215. Bought my 3DS XL with that money.

Well, you lost 25%, give or take. I'm not sure how taxes play out, but I think it sounds reasonable.

Did you get a pay stub detailing your hours/deductions?

My first paycheck was completely slashed by uniform and taxes and other deductions. It should say so on your paycheck if they had deducted anything. Before you make any rash decisions that might put you on your bosses bad side, try having like a parent or such look over your paycheck to see if everything is as it should be.

Shouldn't this be covered during orientation day?

In some countries like where I live (Canada) companies can have unpaid breaks.
Taxes. Where I live even if you are 16 you still have to pay CPP and EI.

$126 sounds like a good amount of taxes.
I get taxed $380/bi-weekly + deductions is another big chunk because of health benefits.

It's likely taxes/deductions.

Are you Canadian?

I know I get a decent % taken out (more % if I work a lot that week because it adjusts tax bracket weekly for some reason) every week for income tax, EI and CPP (Canada pension plan).

Call your local labor board. Keep track of all the days you've worked to use as evidence.
