Cat crying outside

To keep it short, there's a cat outside crying (or moaning?) and it's 11pm so it sounds real weird. (My dad said cat, I thought it was a crying baby.)
Is it a cat thing or is something wrong? Like do cats usually cry or moan late at night?

Forgive me for sounding like a idiot. I've never had a cat (or any pet) and idk how cats are like.

@DragonBandit: Oh no I do remember you :o Don't remember much about what we talked about sadly. :x Sorry I don't keep in touch with basil a lot lol. I only come here when I'm REALLY bored. How long have you been in the army and when will you be done? :o
possibly check where it comes from, can have several reasons for cats to meow. You can just hope it's not in pain or anything, but you won't know until you check, really.
I never heard cats meow at night before but we don't have many wild cats in this area (and neither where I lived before)
Our cat starts meowing in the morning shortly after my husband leaves and I go back to bed cause she feels lonely. Her meow sounds very different then (compared to her 'FEED ME GOSHDARNIT..." and "SNUGGLE ME NOW!" meows).
Your alive o.o

I usually hear cats at night too. Doubt that is something to be worried about. What keeps me awake is when I hear catfights.

yes they do, i have two cats and one of them does it all night long... when the one of mine does it it just wants attention but she stops after a little while, then goes and does it again -_-
