Toriko looks to have that style, sounds really good too

@Lazylazylazy

The first anime you mentioned " Rose...." ,
" Memories " might be worth checking out , a anime movie in 3 parts , part 1 is like the style your looking for

Part 2 is funny and part 3 is great

When it comes to legends of the galaxy , the original mobile suit gundam wing (1995) is good

Jourmand is good too

Happy viewing

Misappropriation Investigator Nakabo Rintaro is written and drawn by the artist of Hokuto. But it plays out kinda like One Punch Man in that he always comes out on top in a relatively funny manner.
Could also try Oyaji if you like massive dongs among other things.

There are still many rec threads popping up, and it seems that a lot of people don't even know that this thread exists (and if it drops off the front page, then I doubt many would go scrolling to look for it), so yes, a sticky would be appropriate.

I'm gonna second Psycho-Pass. It's very good.
Eden of the East possibly? It's detective-mystery sorta kinda.

As for manga...
MPD Psycho - A serial killer with multiple personalities... catching criminals.
Eden: It's an Endless World! - Crime syndicates, drugs, war, call girls on the corner. It has it all.

@novagnome24

Try Psycho Pass. I think it would fit your "crime" series. It has both detectives and criminals. It's a nice thriller.

Novagnome24

Lots of detective stories out there, but I'm having a hard time finding some good "crime" series. I know Zankyou no Terror is a new one, but I'm looking for something along the lines of say, Kurosagi. Hell, I even guess that something along the lines of Kaiji or Liar Game works, cause they're not really playing legally. I guess it would help if the strategies used actually made sense. I'm okay with either anime or manga.

Also, I know bumping threads is frowned upon, but I'm gonna have to reiterate the point I made about how this should be a sticky, cause it seems like a lot of people don't even know this thread exists, and most likely won't go scrolling through /90/ just to check if "maybe there is an official recommendation thread somewhere."
you could try monogatari series, from the same studio as nisekoi. though main girl gets shown in the beginning.
start with bakemonogatari.

from what i see, a typical shounen/action anime
a simple search on crunchyroll shows me jojo.
definetly worth it.

if you want more dark setting like SnK, check fate zero, steins gate or psycho pass. sadly, all 3 are not on crunchyroll
Fate zero is on crunchyroll, but fate/staynight isnt hopefully CR gets it soon. And what is jojo?
Anime:
Texhnolyze - Quite similar to Ergo Proxy, but with a darker, more mature storyline.
Infinite Ryvius - It's essentially Lord of the Flies in space.
Bokurano - Psychological mecha. Dark, thought-provoking.

Manga:
20th Century Boys - From the same guy that gave us Monster.
Eden: It's an Endless World! - Very much real world, with some sci-fi twists... and a bit of religious pyscho-babble. Action, politics, druglords etc.
ooh, I've never seen Ryvius mentioned here. it's the only of those three i have atm (unwatched obv), so i'll start it up!
Eden is one i've never heard of period, but it's got the same mangaka as All Rounder Meguru.

thanks for the recs!

@mmorpg:

Haha good to know that you enjoyed it.

I think you should try Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo. It's not as close as the ones you stated, but I think it's a pretty good watch.

Also if you don't mind some intermediate fanservice, I would recommend Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai. Be warned though. This one doesn't have a very closed ending. Still waiting on season 3 but if you dislike these types of "read the original material" series, I would hesitate to recommend this. It's a good best girl show, Lol.

Haven't seen this show(s) myself, but the Monogatari series is infamous for the one of the best "best girl" element.

EDIT:
The Harem genre is usually plagued with fanservice so the recommendations are very limited.

MANGA RECOMMENDATIONS FOR MY FAVORITE GENRE:[Horror/ psychological] this list has some of my favorite mangas
Some are edgy af/very mature so beware .
Bonus: very very mature but I enjoy these types (Tokyo Akazukin)
Also for more psychological/tragedy but not as disturbing/must read
Aku no Hana
Oyasumi punpun
Doreiku - Boku to 23-nin no Dorei
Tokyo Ghoul
Sundome
Rainbow
Boku wa Mari no Naka
Onani Master Kurosawa
Monster
umibe no onnanoko
Lighter stuff when I feel very disturbed:
One Piece
GE-Good Ending
shokugeki no soma
Hell's Kitchen
Solanin
Horimiya
Bonnouji

@Lathien
Is a bit of light fanservice okay in manga?

Chihayafuru - The most similar art-wise to Ao Haru Ride, but not really romance-based.
I"s - Typical high school romcom with some drama. (A bit of fanservice)
GE: Good Ending - Ditto. (A bit of fanservice)
Watashi(t)achi no Shiawase na Jikan - Short, but really good drama.

@lightxtc
Akira (movie)
Berserk
El Hazard: The Magnificent World - I highly recommend the dubbed version, as the jokes are lost in translation.
Great Teacher Onizuka - Greatest comedy ever! Slow start though. Solid drama and (a hint of) romance appears as the series progresses.
Kimagure Orange Road
Trigun
Cowboy Bebop

Hey everyone. I'm looking for great anime classics made in the 80s, 90s and early 2000s. I've realized that nearly all of the anime shows I've ever watched were produced in the past 10 years. I can't truly call myself an anime fan if I haven't even seen the older stuff.

I'm open to all genres, preferably action and comedy but I'll watch them all. Recommend me something that stood out and was a must watch for its time.

What I want:
- Something I can read at school
- No ecchi please
- Entertaining
Toaru Kagaku no Railgun.

It is a monthly manga of around 70 chapters with two anime adaptations. It is very action-oriented with some slice of life and comedy when the action's not going on. The story is set entirely within a technologically advanced city that is 20 to 30 years ahead of the rest of the world. Much of the sci-fi is focused on esper powers with a bit of machinery and whatnot involved. School life... not really, and while the main characters do go to school and do some school things like festivals, the things they do don't really pertain to our school life. Not that we really do school festivals in our western society anyway. I'd say it suits your preferred genres pretty well.

It's not ecchi and easily accessible as long as you have internet. Certainly entertaining, though the art style may seem a little jarring in the first few chapters (art evolution .), especially if you have seen Index novel illustrations / manga / anime (or Railgun anime). And speaking of Index, reading or watching Toaru Majutsu no Index, the main story, can also give some context into some events in Railgun and you'll spot all the references they include as well.

Hmm, on second thought it's not really a standalone series and you would probably be better off doing some Index first. And tbh the art and animation in Toaru Kagaku no Railgun S is so spectacular that it would be a shame to view the action scenes through the manga artist's art first (it is only in the latest arc does the art seem to really improve). Of course, all of this is assuming you haven't already read or watched it already.

hoping to get anime recs that will push me to downsize my backlog or pick up other, good things

genres i'm interested in: psychological, slice of life, action, mecha, comedy. horror elements are fine, i would prefer romance not be the primary focus of any recs.
bonus points for nontraditional art styles or anime from early 2000's or before.

series i've enjoyed:
ergo proxy - strong dystopian premise. good mix of action and investigation/introspection. midsection heavy with experimental storytelling techniques and varied tone.
denno coil - heartwarming and true-to-life SOL. whimsical technology/otherworld. doesn't pull punches and declines into fairly dark territory near the end.
tsuritama - balances the supernatural and ridiculous with an inspiring story of two boys finding themselves through a hobby/each other. amazing supporting soundtrack.
mononoke - presents ghost stories as multi-part mysteries. nontraditional art style.
tiger and bunny - large cast of likable characters that regularly interact. basic premise (superheroes) with a twist (sponsors, hero ranks, etc!). doesn't take itself too seriously.

i'd also love a couple manga recs!
genres: historical, fantasy, SOL, comedy, mystery.

series i've enjoyed:
berserk - epitome of modern seinen imo. amazing artistic accomplishment and a perfectly dark fantasy story. obvious...completion issues aside.
national quiz - unique and expressive art. multi-sided political conflict.
monster
assassination classroom
veritas

The people who make the same threads over and over again aren't the same people who already know where to look. Subscribing will only cater to the latter, but the former will keep making threads. I guess at least Yummy can get those threads locked fairly quickly now that the official thread is out. What I was thinking of is how 'Rate my Look' thread is now pretty much just one huge thread, as opposed to having them pop up again and again in the fashion corner.
