Anime

What animes would you recommend me?

I've finally gotten around to making time to watch some TV and have taken some interest in anime. I like the medium since, unlike most American animations, more serious plots and topics are pursued. And that's really what I'm looking for here, interesting or thought-provoking animes that deal with more mature themes. I don't mean anything sexual in nature. That being said, some sex or nudity are alright if it's not gratuitous or for so-called "fan service."

I've recently began watching C: Control, Jormungand, Level E, Trigun and Shangri-La. Out of those, I liked C and Jormungand the most, not sure what to make of Shangri-La but it captured my attention and while Level E seems well made and has an interesting concept, it's a bit too light-hearted and comedic for me as of right now. Trigun is pretty cool as well but not nearly as much as what I'm looking for as Jormungand.

Of the ones I've watched, I loved Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo the most though Black Dynamite, Afro Samurai and Boondocks have given me good laughs as well. Hopefully this helps in giving me some recommendations. Thanks basil

For anime's like cowboy bebop and jormungand, I would strongly advise Black Lagoon and Dogs: Bullets & Carnage , Black Lagoon is exactly what your looking for , I would put Cowboy bebop and Black lagoon in the same category and then put Jormungand as a new comer to that category

Sounds like you've got plenty to watch , Enjoy and hope you hear from you soon !

Happy viewing!

As some people have mentioned

Black lagoon would be number 1 on your to watch list , falls in the same group as cowboy bebop and jormungand

Other people have mention Magi , Guilty crown and Great teacher Onizuka , all very good

Fairy tale is good

The " big 3" are worth watching , Bleach , One piece and Naurto

So is Full metal alchemist

Happy viewing ! Welcome back to anime and TV

Also Archer is very very funny

Neon Genesis Evangelion and Paranoia Agent pretty much fits your criteria I believe. We seem to have pretty similar tastes.

If you're willing to read manga, I HIGHLY recommend Oyasumi Punpun (Goodnight Punpun). It's really extremely depressing but it's a great read.

so basically an anime with no/very few fanservice, while being serious.

k, just watch few of this:
steins gate (**** is getting real post episode 12. so real, it made on rank 2 on MAL list)
shingeki no kyojin (mother of god, with the titans there comes despair everywhere)
death note
code geass (fanservice is okay, they are not waving and stripping)
black lagoon (you want some crazy girls? with guns? and awesomeness? this is it. btw fanservice is more tamed)
baccano! (confusing first episode, but gets amazing later on, with a funny comedic duo, a psycho murderer, immortals and alchemy...)
FMAB (fullmetal alchemist brotherhood, not comparable with FMA (fullmetal alchemist, same beginning, but diverges later. FMAB follows the original manga)
Fate Zero (comparable to games of thrones. do not bother watching the sequel Fate Stay Night, the one from studio Deen fails hard. though, they are planning an reanimation by ufotable (who made Fate Zero) with a different story line in autmn)

general animes i would not recommend you watching
any anime with 100+ episodes.
seriously. most (if not, all) of these got a manga, just read the manga, you skip tons of fillers, drawn out scenes (in the anime there are scenes when they stare each other for 5min saying nothing. seriously nothing.) if you want to watch the action scenes, just google and rewatch the episodes after reading the manga. skip the rest. seriously. the only 2 animes i would possibly exempt from this rule is Hajime no Ippo and Gintama.
Hajime no Ippo has later on some of the best animated fight scenes i have ever seen. and it is an anime about frigging boxing. no seriously. some of these intense fights are way better than DBZ (5 episodes for one giant ball of energy...), for example this Takamura vs Hawk, snapping scene, conclusion of the fight. it also got some of the best comedy out there.
speaking of comedy, the best comedy anime is Gintama. except for the first 2 episodes being fillers, so just start with episode 3. also it starts somewhat slowly, but after episode 15-20 it is literally the best. i have found myself literally ROLFing on the floor after few moments. they got running jokes, character jokes, funny moments like this, parodies to other animes like here or here about dragonball with occasional feels moments. heck they even parodied some of the western culture, like star wars... twice... or barack obama/will smith... and tons of other people... lol

to get an basica idea what a good anime is and what not, you can use the rating on MAL (myanimelist.net). basically all animes with a rating abouve 8 is so good that they have a small or large fanbase dedicated to it. or you can watch amv's to see whether you like the animation of an anime or not

also, my personal favourite, the monogtari franchise, containing animes like bakemonogatari, nisemonogatari, nekomonogatari and monogatari series second season.
though, part of it is bit ecchi (especially nisemonogatari) but if you got too much free time, give it a shot. also, if you only got an attention span of a goldfish, you will probably dislike it.

If you haven't watched it already, you can try Birdy the Mighty Decode. It's an Action/Fantasy based anime, with a few other thought provoking elements. it may sound mainstream but trust me it's not, I've watched around 400+ anime titles, not including movies/ova's, so I have a sense of what might be good or bad by now lol.

+1 for Fate/Zero.
+1 for TWGOK.

Dropped Madoka, the main plot and development might be nice and all, but shaft did a bad job with the animations and art, you could tell they were still animating as it aired. If you don't mind poor art then I would recommend this too. If you're into romance, I'd also stay away from Angel beats!, the plot is rushed and the characters are one dimensional; generic and also have forced romance between them.
Madoka Magica is actually a very good anime.
The producers did an excellent job misleading the public that it's just another Sailor Moon anime. But WHAMM something happens and turns everything upside down (in a good way).
There's a reason why it's ranked #48 anime of all time on myanimelist. Personally, it's my 4th favorite anime, and I watched well over 200 titles.

Other titles you should put as priority to watch are (with rankings from myanimelist):
Code Geass (Season 1 is #15, Season 2 is #8)
Steins;Gate (#2)
Fullmetal Alchemist (#1)
Clannad After Story, infamous to be a tear-jerking anime, though you have to watch the prequel "Clannad" to fully appreciate the anime (Season 1 in the #90s, Season 2 is #3).
Fate/Zero (#20-30s for both seasons)

You really should watch those five along with Madoka Magica. I would recommend more but I don't want to overwhelm you.
I approve this message. Seriously though, anything ranked in like the top 10 on MAL is definitely worth a watch.

Haha gotcha, my b then. Thought you'd recommended the exact opposite of what I'd like!

OT:
Ty everyone for the suggestions! I feel kinda sheepish now seeing that we actually have an anime section and there's even an official thread of recommendations. My b, I just go on Chat and forget there's other sections haha.

I personally just finished watching Puella Magi Madoka Magica recently and trust me, it's not what you would expect. Although I was already aware of that fact when I watched it. Anyways, pretty dark and serious. I suggest just watching the 'movies' 1 and 2 because they're recaps with better animations and all at once instead of the usual episode by episode.
Also, I'd highly recommend watching Steins;Gate as well. You mind and heart will literally be toyed with...
Code Geass (both seasons) are definitely worth the watch.
Guilty Crown for the amazing animation and music (love the OST). Plot, you may or may not like it because of the plot twists, but I personally loved it. Also the main character you might hate, but he undergoes a serious change mid-end and sort of makes up for it.
All of these are dark(ish) and serious.

For serious and more thought provoking I would say something like
Shin sekai yori
rin daughters of mnemosyne
higurashi
5cm per second
Death Note (somehow..not that mature I guess)
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Ghost in the shell
puella magi madoka magica (don't be put off by its outer appearance, it's a deconstruction of the magical girl genre)
Colorful (its a movie but I really do reccomend it)
Anohana (I just put this here cause it's what got me into anime and made me feel true sadness)
Manga since these aren't exactly animes but do deserve to be made into one someday I think
Oyasumii Punpun
Nozoki Ana
Aku no Hana(I think the manga is much more fulfilling and does a better job than the anime)
